Josh Hartnett<\/strong><\/a> had no desire to go method when it came to portraying a serial killer in his new film Trap<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI tried not to bring much of myself to the role nor let much of this character come home with me because \u2014 if you want to be blunt \u2014\u00a0 all of it, everything that [my character] is doing in this film, is basically a front,\u201d Hartnett, 46, exclusively told Us Weekly<\/em> at the Trap<\/em> world premiere<\/a> on Wednesday, July 24. \u201cHe\u2019s a true psychopath.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hartnett plays Cooper \u2014 an infamous serial killer nicknamed \u201cThe Butcher\u201d \u2014 in the psychological thriller, which is written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan<\/strong>. Cooper\u2019s world gets turned upside down when he realizes the Lady Raven (Saleka Shyamalan<\/strong>) concert<\/a> he\u2019s taken his daughter (Ariel Donoghue<\/strong>) to is a trap set up by police to catch him.<\/p>\n

While the trailer for the film shows Cooper being an attentive dad to his teen, Hartnett told Us<\/em> that everything viewers see is a facade. \u201cThere\u2019s no way that he could feel empathy toward his daughter,\u201d he explained. \u201cHe couldn\u2019t love her the way that we love.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tRon Davis\/Getty Images Don\u2019t call it a comeback because Josh Hartnett has been a bona fide heartthrob since the late \u201890s \u2014 but there\u2019s no denying the actor has been experiencing a major renaissance since stepping back into the spotlight over the past few years. Hartnett first rose to fame in the horror genre, making [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

That doesn\u2019t mean the character can\u2019t go through a journey of his own. \u201cSomething in this film that is so interesting,\u201d Hartnett noted, \u201cis this story of a psychopath learning that maybe he\u2019s not entirely God.\u201d<\/p>\n

While Hartnett admitted that a film told from a serial killer\u2019s POV might not initially seem all that attractive to moviegoers, the actor praised Shyamalan for creating something \u201creally fun\u201d and unexpected.<\/p>\n

\u201cHopefully by halfway through the film, you\u2019re actually rooting for the character and it\u2019s a strange thing to have happen,\u201d he continued. \u201cI love that about M. Night, he\u2019s always taking genres and upending expectations and coming out with a different angle. And this film\u2019s no different.\u201d<\/p>\n

Shyamalan, of course, is known for his epic plot twists. And while the main character being revealed as a psychotic murderer certainly counts, that wasn\u2019t how Hartnett perceived things when reading the script. Instead, it was taking a genre and changing \u201ceverything about it\u201d to keep the viewer on their toes.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s what people will remember him for,\u201d Hartnett told Us<\/em>. \u201cIn the meantime, I guess people get caught up the idea of a twist, but I think [while] there are some twists and turns, it\u2019s more just, like, you\u2019re taking this ride in an entirely different way than you\u2019ve ever taken one before. Which I think is fantastic. Not many people could direct a film like this.\u201d<\/p>\n

Shyamalan, meanwhile, has just as much adoration for Hartnett. While speaking to Us<\/em>, the director explained why the Oppenheimer<\/em> star was the perfect choice for the role of Cooper.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen he walked in, he just had an energy about him that was [a] superstar,\u201d Shyamalan said. \u201cHe\u2019s a superstar \u2014 but that was one half of the equation. The other half of the equation is, \u2018Hey, I\u2019m willing, I\u2019m ready to do anything, whatever you want, I don\u2019t want to be safe.\u2019 Like he pretty much said that to me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Echoing Hartnett\u2019s own sentiments, Shyamalan said<\/a> the duo were \u201clike-minded\u201d when it came to the type of film they wanted to make.<\/p>\n
