It&#8217;s also allowing passengers with travel booked between now and Sunday to preemptively cancel and get a refund.<\/p>\n<p>That announcement follows a five-day fiasco that saw hundreds of thousands of passengers&#8217; travel plans affected, the U.S. Department of Transportation estimates. The DOT on Tuesday <a href=\"https:\/\/thepointsguy.com\/news\/dot-investigates-delta-meltdown\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">announced an investigation<\/a> into the Atlanta-based carrier&#8217;s response.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"cancellations-are-trending-downward\" class=\"jsx-2362441780 anchor\"\/><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"jsx-2362441780\">Cancellations are trending downward<\/h2>\n<p>After seeing cancellation rates steadily fall Tuesday, Delta&#8217;s operations improved dramatically on Wednesday. The carrier also noted Wednesday that Bastian felt operations were improved enough to move forward <a href=\"https:\/\/thepointsguy.com\/news\/delta-meltdown-ed-bastian-paris\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">with a planned trip to Paris for the Olympics<\/a> on Wednesday (for which Delta was a sponsor of the U.S. Olympic team).<\/p>\n<p>Delta was among several U.S. airlines affected by a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/07\/19\/technology\/microsoft-crowdstrike-outage-what-happened.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">faulty update from cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike<\/a>, which affected Windows systems around the world.<\/p>\n<p>But even as other carriers recovered, Delta&#8217;s cancellations continued to mount. CHRISTIAN MONTERROSA\/BLOOMBERG\/GETTY IMAGES<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;While our initial efforts to stabilize the operations were difficult and frustratingly slow and complex, we have made good progress this week, and the worst impacts of the CrowdStrike-caused outage are behind us,&#8221; Bastian wrote in a letter Wednesday morning.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"lawmakers-question-response\" class=\"jsx-2362441780 anchor\"\/><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"jsx-2362441780\">Lawmakers question response<\/h2>\n<p>But Delta will face no shortage of questions in the weeks to come.<\/p>\n<p>On top of an investigation announced Tuesday by the DOT&#8217;s Office of Aviation Consumer Protections, Congressional leaders are also demanding answers about the carrier&#8217;s response.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;While the technology outage was clearly not caused by Delta or any airline, I am nevertheless concerned that Delta is failing to meet the moment,&#8221; Sen. Maria Cantwell, D-Wash., wrote in a letter Tuesday; she called for a response from Bastian by July 30.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/thepointsguy.com\/guide\/how-to-not-get-stuck-during-airline-delays-cancellations\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">What to do if your flight is canceled or delayed<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a id=\"how-delta-is-responding\" class=\"jsx-2362441780 anchor\"\/><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"jsx-2362441780\">How Delta is responding<\/h2>\n<p>For its part, Delta says it has provided stranded passengers with meals, hotel accommodations and ground transportation, per its guarantees spelled out in the DOT&#8217;s Airline Customer Service <a href=\"https:\/\/www.transportation.gov\/airconsumer\/airline-customer-service-dashboard\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dashboard<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Bastian also said the carrier is providing travel vouchers and SkyMiles to affected passengers &#8220;as a further gesture of apology.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>One affected TPG reader shared that they received 12,500 SkyMiles, per a letter from Delta.
