Cowboy is rolling out a free over-the-air update to its single-speed, belt-driven e-bikes that promises to flatten steeper hills while also making its 250W rear-hub motor more efficient when the road levels out \u2014 no gear changes required. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n
Specifically, Cowboy says its\u00a0AdaptivePower 2.0<\/a>\u00a0update will help take riders up hills that are 50 percent steeper while saving 10 percent more power on flat roads. These improvements are compared to the company\u2019s first-generation adaptive power tech that Cowboy launched just over a year ago<\/a>, which automatically adjusts power delivery based on incline, headwind, or extra hauling weight.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n As Cowboy explains it, adaptive power relies on a proprietary (and\u00a0once contested<\/a>) algorithm that monitors the electrical output of the motor controller and the real-time data collected from the torque sensor. And as I recently wrote,\u00a0a torque sensor without optimization<\/a> on a single-speed e-bike\u00a0is no joy to ride.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cThis represents a new level of intelligence for all our e-bikes that already think for themselves,\u201d says Tanguy Goretti, Cowboy\u2019s cofounder and chief technology officer. \u201cThanks to connectivity and over-the-air updates, even a three-year-old Cowboy model will now have a better ride feel than when it left the production line.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n The software update will be released to existing\u00a0Classic<\/a>,\u00a0Cruiser<\/a>, and\u00a0Cross<\/a>\u00a0e-bike owners \u201cin the coming days\u201d and will ship standard on all new Cowboy e-bikes starting today.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
