Brittney was in the country playing with the EuroLeague team UMMC Ekaterinburg during the WNBA offseason.<\/p>\n By the time the news broke in the United States in March 2022, Brittney had already been detained for two weeks<\/a>. Officials were initially worried that an aggressive response could hurt her chances of a safe return amid Russia\u2019s conflict with Ukraine, but in May 2022, the U.S. State Department said that Russia had \u201cwrongfully detained\u201d the Texas native.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s an absolutely unimaginable situation for for BG,\u201d WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert<\/strong> told Time<\/em><\/a> after the State Department\u2019s reclassification. \u201cThere\u2019s not a day that goes by that I\u2019m not working on this in some way.
