It could have been a very different Dunder Mifflin but Bob Odenkirk<\/strong> is happy Steve Carell<\/strong><\/a> was chosen to play Michael Scott in The Office<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Odenkirk, 61, who was a frontrunner against Carell, 61, when the show was cast in 2003, said Carell has often outshone him as a comedic actor.<\/p>\n

Speaking on the \u201cOffice Ladies<\/a>\u201d podcast, hosted by The Office<\/em> alums<\/a> Jenna Fischer<\/strong> and Angela Kinsey<\/strong>, the Breaking Bad<\/em> star said, \u201cI am, in a strange way, a very earnest person for a person in comedy. I am oddly earnest, and \u2026 it\u2019s one of the reasons I think Steve Carell is a better, you know \u2014 is the one who got the role.\u201d<\/p>\n

Odenkirk added that Carell, who starred as Michael Scott, a regional manager at a fictional paper company called Dunder Mifflin, managed to secure even further roles while up against Odenkirk over the years.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tIt\u2019s been nearly 20 years since viewers first followed the employees at the Dunder Mifflin Paper Company on The Office. The sitcom, which premiered in March 2005, starred Steve Carell (Michael Scott), Rainn Wilson (Dwight Schrute), John Krasinski (Jim Halpert), Jenna Fischer (Pam Beesley), Angela Kinsey (Angela Martin), Mindy Kaling (Kelly Kapoor), B.J. Novak (Ryan [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s because he\u2019s better at being genuinely fun,\u201d Odenkirk told Fischer, 50, who played Pam Beesly, and Kinsey, 53, who played Angela Martin<\/a>, on the podcast. \u201cI think I bring with me a little bit too much earnest seriousness. And it\u2019s just kinda there. And there\u2019s nothing I can do about it except play other roles where it\u2019s helpful to have that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Odenkirk became the breakout star of Breaking Bad<\/em>, in the role of Saul Goodman, and went on to star in the spin-off TV series, Better Call Saul<\/em>. He also appeared in The Bear<\/em>\u2019s second season as Uncle Lee.<\/p>\n

The actor said he believes he struggles to convince TV audiences he is a \u201cpurely light character,\u201d which in turn has resulted in more serious castings. \u201cYou just are looking for the darkness [in me], and that\u2019s actually great in drama,\u201d he said. \u201cThat\u2019s a plus, you know? But in comedy, it\u2019s not a plus.\u201d<\/p>\n

While the Emmy nominated star didn\u2019t land the role Michael Scott, he did appear in The Office<\/em> during the show\u2019s ninth and final season in 2013. Odenkirk played Mark Franks, an almost bizarro character to Scott, who managed a Philadelphia-based real estate company. His character interviewed Pam as she considered moving her life to the city to be closer to her husband Jim Halpert, played by John Krasinski<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n
