Shannen Doherty<\/a>, best known for her roles on<\/span> Beverly Hills, 90210<\/span><\/em> and <\/span>Charmed<\/span><\/em>, has died. She was 53.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n “It is with a heavy heart that I confirm the passing of actress Shannen Doherty. On Saturday, July 13, she lost her battle with cancer after many years of fighting the disease,” the late actresses longtime publicist Leslie Sloane told <\/span>People<\/a><\/em> on Sunday.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n “The devoted daughter, sister, aunt and friend was surrounded by her loved ones as well as her dog, Bowie. The family asks for their privacy at this time so they can grieve in peace.”<\/span><\/p>\n In December 2023, the <\/span>Beverly Hills 90210<\/span><\/em> star <\/span>spoke to ET<\/a> about her tough year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n “This year has been extremely tough for me. I’ve been thrown a lot of curveballs, and ones that I never expected in a million years,” Doherty shared. “And not just with my cancer battle, but my personal life too. So it’s been really hard.”<\/span><\/p>\n Among the tribulations she faced,\u00a0<\/span>Doherty was informed that she had to undergo brain surgery<\/a>\u00a0after her cancer returned — around the time that she learned of her\u00a0<\/span>then-husband\u00a0Kurt Iswarienko’s alleged affair, and subsequently filed for divorce.<\/a><\/p>\n Still, she was optimistic about her future.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n “I’ve loved in the past, and even though it didn’t work out, it was still really beautiful, and I learned a lot from the person and appreciated them,” Doherty explained. “Even with the marriage that is now over, there were some great times.”<\/span><\/p>\n Doherty\u00a0<\/span>has been open about her cancer journey<\/a>\u00a0in recent years, and spoke about her health and career most recently on her podcast, <\/span>Let’s Be Clear With Shannen Doherty<\/i><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The actress was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015. The following year, she revealed that she underwent numerous rounds of chemotherapy before it went into remission in 2017.<\/span><\/p>\n In 2020, during an interview with\u00a0<\/span>Good Morning America<\/span><\/em>, Doherty\u00a0<\/span>shared that her cancer returned and was stage 4<\/a>, which meant that it spread from its original location. In 2021, the\u00a0<\/span>Heathers<\/span><\/em>\u00a0actress spoke with ET and shared that while she was “doing well” at the time of her interview, she was optimistic about the year ahead.<\/span><\/p>\n “If I were dreaming of what would happen in 2022, I think lot more research and progression as far as finding the cure for cancer is my ultimate, ultimate dream\u00a0because even though I am thriving and I\u2019m doing well, I still have cancer and\u00a0you don\u2019t want stage 4, but I have it and so I think in the back of my mind, this constant sort of, ‘OK, what can I do to help bring more awareness, what can I do the help raise money, what can I do to sort of push research for not just myself but for everybody else who is suffering from cancer?'” Doherty shared.<\/span><\/p>\n Then, in June 2023, the actress made the heartbreaking revelation that her <\/span>cancer had spread to her brain<\/a>. In a post on Instagram, Doherty admitted, “My fear is obvious.”\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Following her initial diagnosis in 2015, Doherty has chronicled many aspects of the grueling battle on social media, filming everything from chemotherapy treatments to shaving off her infamous dark long locks,\u00a0and proudly rocking a bald head.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Doherty was born on April 12, 1971, in Memphis, Tennessee. She\u00a0began her career as a child actor, and\u00a0landed small roles on the ’80s\u00a0shows\u00a0<\/span>Voyagers! <\/span><\/i>and <\/span>Father Murphy. <\/span><\/i>She went on to\u00a0secure\u00a0a recurring role on\u00a0<\/span>Little House on the Prairie\u00a0<\/span><\/i>and\u00a0appeared in the 1985 film\u00a0<\/span>Girls Just Want to Have Fun<\/span><\/i>\u00a0and the TV series <\/span>Our House.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n In 1988, Doherty starred opposite Christian Slater and Winona Ryder\u00a0in the dark comedy<\/span>\u00a0Heathers<\/span><\/i>, and two\u00a0years later, she scored her big break as Brenda Walsh on <\/span>Beverly Hills,<\/span><\/em>\u00a0<\/span>90210<\/span><\/i>.\u00a0Despite low ratings in its inaugural season,<\/span> 90210<\/span><\/i>\u00a0eventually became one of the most popular shows\u00a0of the ’90s\u00a0and turned the cast of relative newcomers into certified stars. For her part, Doherty gained a reputation as the cast member who refused to be confined by a cookie-cutter image. She posed nude for <\/span>Playboy <\/span><\/i>three times, first\u00a0in 1993, again in 1994, and then in 2011. Months later, Doherty married Ashley Hamilton (son of actor George Hamilton) after two weeks of dating. The couple divorced in 1994. The couple was married for 11 years, with the actress <\/span>filing for divorce<\/a> in April 2023. At the time, her rep told ET that “Divorce is the last thing Shannen wanted.”\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n “Unfortunately, she felt she was left with no other option,” the statement continued<\/span><\/p>\n Career-wise, Doherty reunited with Combs in 2015 for the six-episode road trip series\u00a0<\/span>Off the Map With\u00a0Shannen & Holly<\/span><\/i>. Doherty later joined the 2016 TV reboot of\u00a0<\/span>Heathers,<\/span><\/i> and in 2019, Doherty starred in\u00a0<\/span>BH90210. <\/span><\/i>The show featured original <\/span>90210 <\/span><\/em>cast members Brian Austin Green, Jennie Garth, Jason Priestley, Tori Spelling, Gabrielle Carteris, and Ian Ziering\u00a0as\u00a0heightened versions of themselves. It\u00a0<\/span>was canceled<\/a> after one season.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Doherty’s former <\/span>90210 <\/span><\/em>co-star <\/span>Luke Perry<\/a> died after\u00a0<\/span>suffering a stroke<\/a> prior to filming the reboot, and his sudden death made Doherty\u00a0question her own mortality.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cIt was so weird for me to be diagnosed and then somebody who was seemingly healthy to go first,\u201d she told <\/span>Good Morning America<\/a> <\/span><\/em>in 2020. \u201cIt was really shocking, and the least I could do to honor him was do that show. I still haven\u2019t done enough.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n While initially keeping her cancer fight out of the public eye, Doherty leaned on one of her <\/span>90210 <\/span><\/i>co-stars for support. \u201cBrian [Austin Green] was the one person of that group of people that knew,\u201d she explained. \u201cI told [him] pretty quickly. Prior to shooting, he would always call me and say, \u2018Listen, whatever happens, I have your back.'”<\/span><\/p>\n
