\nThe 4ft 7in tall straight-talker, best known as Dr Ruth and who is globally renowned for revolutionising the way the world talked about sex and sexuality while driving the \u2018sexpert\u2019 industry \u2013 despite saying she was a \u201csquare\u201d \u2013 died peacefully at home in Manhattan, New York City, while clutching her family\u2019s hands, her publicist said on Saturday. \nDr Ruth\u2019s representative Pierre Lehu added in a statement to Page Six: \u201cShe died peacefully, at home, holding the hands of her son and daughter.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nIn a separate comment to People, Pierre added: \u201cIt was as peacefully as she could possibly go. She was 96.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cIt\u2019s amazing, there was stuff still going on in her life and someone wants to make a biopic about her.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nNo cause of death has yet been announced.<\/p>\n
\nGerman-American Ruth \u2013 who married three times and had two children \u2013 was born Karola Ruth Seigel on 4 June, 1928, in Wiesenfeld, Germany.<\/p>\n
\nAged 10 she was sent to Switzerland to escape World War Two and was the sole survivor of her family, who were all wiped out in the Holocaust. <\/p>\n
\nAs a teen, she moved to Palestine and joined the Israeli army where she was trained as a sniper \u2013 though never shot anyone.<\/p>\n
\nHer first husband was an Israeli solder and she moved to Paris with him in 1950, where she studied psychology at the Sorbonne. <\/p>\n
\nThe couple split five years after the move and she set up home in the US with her second husband, with whom she had daughter Miriam.<\/p>\n
\nThey also split and she married for the third and final time to Manfred Westheimer.<\/p>\n
\nThe pair had son Joel and stayed together for 36 years until Manfred was killed by heart failure in 1997. <\/p>\n
\nRuth obtained her doctorate from Columbia University and taugh sex education at Lehman College in the Bronx, New York, and to women at Planned Parenthood. <\/p>\n
\nWhile supporting safe sex, Ruth\u2019s mission was to get people to openly discuss sex and sexuality.<\/p>\n
\nShe said in 2022 about how it was at odds with her character: \u201cI still hold old-fashioned values and I\u2019m a bit of a square. <\/p>\n
\n\u201cSex is a private art and a private matter. But still, it is a subject we must talk about.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nRuth\u2019s media career exploded in 1980 when she started hosting the call-in radio show \u2018Sexually Speaking\u2019, and by 1983 it was one of the US\u2019 top-rated programmes on the airwaves.<\/p>\n
\nBy 1984 she had her own TV program \u2013 the world renowned \u2018Dr Ruth Show\u2019, which featured the host\u2019s blunt and witty advice on sex.<\/p>\n
\nShe went on to rack up appearances on the US\u2019 most popular shows including \u2018The Howard Stern Radio Show\u2019, \u2018The Tonight Show\u2019, \u2018The Ellen DeGeneres Show\u2019 and \u2018The Dr Oz Show\u2019.<\/p>\n
\nHer estimated net worth of at least $3 million was boosted by her string of best-selling books including \u2018Sex for Dummies\u2019, \u2018All in a Lifetime\u2019 and \u2018Musically Speaking: A Life through Song\u2019.<\/p>\n
\nRuth told Page Six on her 94th birthday she was on a mission to help lonely people through the Covid pandemic, declaring: \u201cI would like to be the ambassador for the state of New York combating loneliness \u2013 I want to give good advice to people who are lonely.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
