There are so many reasons Kylie Cantrall<\/strong> is excited to be the lead in Disney\u2019s\u00a0Descendants: The Rise of Red<\/em> \u2014 but nothing beats the \u201cinsane\u201d fact that she got to work alongside her childhood hero, Brandy<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel like I may have manifested working with Brandy because of the fact that, I kid you not, I had a CD of her Never Say Never<\/em> album in my dad\u2019s old car that he had when I was growing up,\u201d Cantrall, 19, exclusively told Us Weekly<\/em> ahead of the musical\u2019s Friday, July 12, release. \u201cThere\u2019s, like, a little cassette in it. You could put CDs in there and I would just play that album every single time I got in the car on the way to school. I knew it front and backwards.\u201d<\/p>\n

Calling Brandy her \u201cvocal bible\u201d growing up, Cantrall said just getting to be in the singer\u2019s \u201cpresence\u201d was a really \u201cspecial\u201d and personal milestone. \u201cMy younger self was freaking out,\u201d she gushed. \u201cShe\u2019s so kind and just the most humble. It was so, so sweet.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rise of Red<\/em> serves as the fourth film \u2014 and newest chapter \u2014 of the Descendants<\/em> franchise. Cantrall stars as Red, the rebellious daughter of the Queen of Hearts (Rita Ora<\/strong><\/a>), while Brandy plays the iconic Cinderella. The film follows Red as she and Cinderella\u2019s daughter, Chloe (Malia Baker<\/strong>), travel back in time in an attempt to undo the traumatic event that led the Queen of Hearts down a villainous path \u2014 and ended her years-long friendship with Cinderella.<\/p>\n

While Ora, 33, plays the deliciously evil Queen, Cantrall said the actress\/singer is nothing short of wonderful behind the scenes. The duo spent most of their time laughing, gossiping and snapping photos in between shots.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s, like, the cool big sister I never had,\u201d Cantrall said, recalling a particular scene where Red and the Queen travel to Auradon Prep together. \u201cWe had a couple days where we were filming that sequence and I just remember specifically us being in that car and, like, taking so many selfies. That was our really bonding moment, filming that scene, because we were all day on set together.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cantrall, as an upcoming singer and artist herself, also looked to Ora for advice, which the \u201cDon\u2019t Think Twice\u201d singer was happy to share.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s just so encouraging,\u201d Cantrall told Us<\/em>. \u201cShe would always just be like, \u2018Oh my gosh, you\u2019re going to make your dreams happen, never stop\u2019 and just was super uplifting.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ora also didn\u2019t hold back when discussing the really important topics, like boys.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s like, \u2018Darling, boys are a waste of time. Trust me they\u2019re terrible at your age,\u201d Cantrall recalled, laughing. \u201cShe just made the whole experience really, really fun. She\u2019s\u00a0 great.\u201d<\/p>\n

If working with her childhood hero and getting advice from one today\u2019s biggest artists wasn\u2019t cool enough, Cantrall also got to step into Dove Cameron\u2019s<\/strong> shoes as the new lead of the iconic Descendants<\/em> franchise, films she grew up watching as a kid. The first Descendants<\/em> film<\/a> premiered on Disney in 2015, when Cantrall was only 10 years old.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt feels surreal, especially because of the fact that I grew up loving the franchise. Like I caught it in its prime.I\u2019m pretty sure I didn\u2019t even know how to multiply, but I was just so obsessed,\u201d she quipped. \u201cI vividly remember coming home from school running across to my neighbor\u2019s house and us both just like sitting in front of the TV the day that it premiered for the first time. And just\u00a0 being in awe of the dance numbers and the costumes and just the lore of Descendants<\/em>. It\u2019s just one of those movies that is timeless.\u201d<\/p>\n

Of course, carrying the torch of those that came before her is no small feat, and it\u2019s a responsibility the actress took very seriously \u2014 and one that came with a fair amount of pressure.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll be the first to say the originals are perfectI don\u2019t want to taint [them] in any way,\u201d she told Us<\/em>. \u201cIt\u2019s already so good. So I think that was definitely a hurdle to get over.\u201d Despite initial jitters, Cantrall noted that she\u2019s now able to see things from a new perspective.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think like I\u2019ve kind of shifted my mindset and of looking at it more as, we\u2019re carrying it on in a new way, telling a new story while still capturing the essence of what made the original so special,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n

For Cantrall, it\u2019s about introducing the Descendants<\/em> world to an entirely new generation of fans who can love the films as much as she did.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s the coolest thing about being able to bring it back in this new way. To, hopefully, a new audience will find it and discover it for the first time,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd then it\u2019ll inspire them to watch the old ones and just carry it on.\u201d<\/p>\n
