But her hardcore fans know she started her career in the pop punk band Hey Monday \u2014 and for her new album, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/entertainment\/news\/cassadee-pope-announces-shes-leaving-country-music-for-rock\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">she\u2019s going back to her roots<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Pope, 34, quietly returned to the genre a couple of years ago, but her new album, <em>Hereditary<\/em>, finds her diving back into the sounds that she first fell in love with as a teenager. While her country albums always had a rock flair, listeners will find that her new tracks would sound more at home on the Warped Tour than at Stagecoach.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never was super down the middle country, it was always a bit more pop-rock country,\u201d Pope exclusively told <em>Us Weekly<\/em> ahead of <em>Hereditary<\/em>\u2019s Friday, July 12, release. \u201cI think my whole career, if you look at it and you really listen to the music and you see the branding and even how I dress or how I used to dress, I never fit into one genre or style.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fully embracing <em>Hereditary<\/em> as a rock album, however, allowed Pope \u2014 who won season 3 of <em>The Voice<\/em> in 2012 \u2014 to write more candidly than she had in the past. \u201cThree of Us,\u201d for example, is about the heartbreak of watching someone close to you struggle with addiction.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHaving loved ones who struggle with substance abuse and addiction, it\u2019s not something that I\u2019ve ever felt like I had the verbiage to talk about,\u201d she explained. \u201cIn country music, I just couldn\u2019t find a way to write about it in a way that made sense in the genre. I\u2019m sure so many people can and have, but for me, it just wasn\u2019t clicking, and so once I was able to strip all the barriers of country music songwriting and what would work and what wouldn\u2019t work, it just opened my mind up to so many different subject matters, and this was one of them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Cassadee Pope - Three of Us (Official Video)\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2x_DGIkGU_U?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Working outside the framework of mainstream country made Pope feel more at home in her songwriting, both because of the external pressure to produce a hit and the internal realization that her own beliefs didn\u2019t align with those of the powers that be. It\u2019s a sentiment that\u2019s been spreading among several contemporary country artists, many of them women \u2014 recall <strong>Maren Morris<\/strong>\u2019 2023 declaration that she no longer wanted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/entertainment\/news\/maren-morris-is-leaving-country-music-after-toxic-drama\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">anything to do with the industry<\/a>. During season 19 of the NBC singing competition series, New York native Carter Rubin blew audiences away with his singing abilities and saw coach Gwen Stefani secure her first win. At just [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cIt was mostly a societal thing and what country music has historically deemed appropriate and inappropriate, but I think some of it was internal,\u201d Pope told <em>Us<\/em> of leaving country behind. \u201cIt\u2019s hard to be in a genre where you know you don\u2019t believe all of the things that made it what it is. Maybe I\u2019m not Christian, and I\u2019m not sure that you should no matter what say \u2018family first\u2019 because some people\u2019s families aren\u2019t great and they\u2019re abusive. It definitely felt creatively stifling sometimes in country music \u2026 if I wrote something that felt a little bit left of center, like sassy or inappropriate, I would know deep down like, \u2018Country radio is not gonna play this, and it\u2019s not gonna probably do what I would like it to do, success-wise.\u2019 So, yeah, it affected me for sure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When Pope started working on <em>Hereditary<\/em> two years ago, she didn\u2019t set out to make a specific kind of record \u2014 or even an album at all. She also hopes that more industry decision-makers embrace the \u201cfluidity\u201d of genre in the same way that artists and listeners have.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt would be easier for everyone to just accept that artists have a lot of different influences,\u201d she told <em>Us<\/em>. \u201cThey probably didn\u2019t sing the kind of music you\u2019re hearing them singing now back when they were in their bedroom singing into their hairbrush.
