Ariana Grande<\/strong><\/a> is using her voice to speak out.<\/p>\n

In an interview with Evan Ross Katz<\/strong> published on Tuesday, July 9, Grande once again defended her change in tone during a recent interview on the \u201cPodcrushed\u201d podcast<\/a> in June. In a clip that went viral on social media, the singer appeared to switch from a low register to a higher register mid-conversation.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it\u2019s just a very normal thing that certain conversations are different tonally,\u201d Grande told Katz for his Shut Up Evan<\/a> newsletter. \u201cIf I\u2019m feeling very bubbly, I\u2019ll sound more bubbly. If I\u2019m feeling more serious, I\u2019m gonna sound more serious. I\u2019m not the same all the time \u2014 no one is!\u201d<\/p>\n

Grande, 31, also reiterated comments she made last month<\/a> that she changes her intonation to \u201cpreserve my vocal health.\u201d<\/p>\n

The \u201cYes, And?\u201d singer further pointed out that she was immersed in playing Glinda in the upcoming Wicked<\/em> movie adaptation<\/a> for two years, which also resulted in changes to how she sounds.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnother thing that is very real is that I just spent a long time playing a character every single day and training my voice to do different things for a long time, even before leaving for London,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe voice is in the body. It\u2019s an instrument, and muscle memory is a real thing. If I slip in and out of mannerisms or tonal shifts that I trained myself to do every single day for two years, that\u2019s kind of a normal thing,\u201d she continued.<\/p>\n

Grande went on to call out the attention her apparent change in voice has received compared to male actors who put on accents for movie roles.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou see with male actors that after the fact, people are always like: \u2018Oh, wow! How dedicated he is to his craft. The transformation! He\u2019s a brilliant performer,\u2019\u201d said the star. \u201cAnd if God forbid I sneeze like Glinda or make an intonation like her, then I\u2019m crazy and \u2018someone should check on her.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

The film version of the musical, a theatrical staple since its 2004 Broadway debut, has been in development since 2012. Wicked, based on Gregory Maguire\u2019s 1995 novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cAfter I made that comment [about changing my vocal placement], I started thinking about the other ways in which this is normal, and not only normal but also: I had a job to do,\u201d Grande continued.<\/p>\n

She concluded, \u201cIt\u2019s a strange thing to be under such a microscope and sometimes people don\u2019t really know what that\u2019s like, so it\u2019s the weirdest thing. We all do that. We all acclimate, and we all have different modes.\u201d<\/p>\n
