Ridley Scott<\/strong>\u2018s Gladiator<\/em> sequel has been in development for years, and the film is finally coming together \u2014 and to theaters soon \u2014 with an A-list cast.<\/p>\n

Scott directed the 2000 historical drama starring Russell Crowe,<\/strong> Joaquin Phoenix<\/strong>, Oliver Reed<\/strong> and more. The film was a hit at the box office and took home five trophies at the Academy Awards in 2001, including Best Picture.<\/p>\n

Discussions quickly began about either a prequel or a sequel. Scott initially announced in 2003 that the script for a follow-up film was completed, but plans were put on pause in 2006 after DreamWorks Pictures was sold to Paramount. The sequel was officially greenlit 12 years later.<\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t until January 2023 that Gladiator 2<\/em> found its leading man. Paul Mescal<\/strong><\/a>, whose career took off after the release of Hulu\u2019s Normal People<\/em><\/a> in 2020, captivated execs with his performance in a West End production of A Streetcar Named Desire<\/em>. Later that year, Pedro Pascal<\/strong><\/a> and Stranger Things<\/em> breakout star Joseph Quinn<\/strong><\/a> were confirmed to be joining Mescal.<\/p>\n

When filming wrapped, Mescal hinted that he wasn\u2019t quite prepared to be a big movie star<\/a> following his roles in After Sun, All of Us Strangers<\/em> and other smaller budget flicks. \u201cI don\u2019t know what the difference will be. Maybe that\u2019s naive?\u201d he told The Times<\/em> in January 2024. \u201cIs it just that more people will stop you in the street? I\u2019d get profoundly depressed if that\u2019s so and hope it isn\u2019t true.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cI\u2019ll have an answer next year, but if [the film] impacts my life in that way, I\u2019ll be in a bad spot. I\u2019d have to move on and do an obtuse play nobody wants to see.\u201d<\/p>\n
