Emma Roberts<\/strong><\/a> thinks \u201cinternet culture\u201d is at fault for the disastrous performance of her film Madame Web<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Roberts, 33, shared her thoughts on the box office disaster in an interview with Variety<\/em><\/a> published on Friday, July 5.<\/p>\n

\u201cI personally really loved Madame Web<\/em>. I really enjoyed the movie. I thought everyone in it was great,\u201d the Space Cadet<\/em> actress said. \u201cIf it wasn\u2019t for internet culture and everything being made into a joke, I think that the reception would\u2019ve been different.\u201d<\/p>\n

Roberts added that it \u201cbums [her] out\u201d that \u201cpeople just make such a joke out of everything now.\u201d She also noted that there is no magic formula for which projects will ultimately be successful.<\/p>\n

\u201cThings work; things don\u2019t work. Everyone likes to act like they can predict if they\u2019re going to work or they\u2019re not. And the truth is, you can\u2019t,\u201d she said. \u201cThere is no secret. It\u2019s about doing something goodish and it hitting at the right time. Everything else is like a wish and a prayer.\u201d<\/p>\n

Madame Web<\/em> lead actress Dakota Johnson<\/strong> is far less defensive of the project. In an interview with Bustle<\/a> in March, Roberts\u2019 costar said that the film bombed in part because audiences \u201cwill always be able to sniff out bulls\u2013t.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou cannot make art based on numbers and algorithms. My feeling has been for a long time that audiences are extremely smart, and executives have started to believe that they\u2019re not,\u201d the Fifty Shades of Grey<\/em> alum, 34, said. \u201cIt\u2019s not nice to be a part of something that\u2019s ripped to shreds<\/a>, but I can\u2019t say that I don\u2019t understand.\u201d<\/p>\n

Roberts also shared that she was \u201chorrified and shocked<\/a>\u201d by the alleged misconduct and abuse revealed in the behind-the-scenes children\u2019s television documentary Quiet On Set<\/em>.<\/p>\n
