Philip Seymour Hoffman and Bill Paxton are being hailed as \u2018shapeshifters\u2019 by director Jan de Bont<\/p>\n

The pair were cast by 80-year-old filmmaker Jan in his 1996 blockbuster \u2018Twister\u2019, and he has now paid tribute to their talents after Bill was killed by a stroke following heart surgery aged 61 in 2017 \u2013 three years after troubled Philip died aged 46 from a drugs overdose.<\/p>\n

Ahead of the premiere of the long-awaited sequel to \u2018Twister\u2019 \u2013 titled \u2018Twisters\u2019 \u2013 Jan told The Hollywood Reporter: \u201cThose two were basically the shapeshifters of that group, and they helped make a group of really amazing people feel as if they had worked together for a really long time.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s unique to get that feeling on the screen.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bill played Bill Harding in \u2018Twister\u2019 \u2013 a storm chaser who with his wife, played by Helen Hunt<\/a>, 61, seek out tornadoes while trying to create an advanced weather alert system. <\/p>\n

\nPhilip played Dustin Davis, one of the storm chasers on their daredevil crew.<\/p>\n

\nJan, who also made \u2018Speed\u2019 with Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock, both 59, said the \u2018Twister\u2019 cast eventually \u201cbecame such a team\u201d similar to their characters in the film. <\/p>\n

\nHe said he hoped the cast would be \u201crelaxed\u201d around each other, and have \u201cquick-witted banter\u201d off-screen, which he says \u201cdid happen\u201d thanks partly to Philip.<\/p>\n

\nJan went on: \u201cPhilip Seymour Hoffman, who was really laid back, was one of the people who contributed the most for that to happen.<\/p>\n

\n\u201cHe was so completely ready to make a character for himself in the movie.<\/p>\n

\n\u201cIn the script, he was in a lot of pages, but there were very few scenes with him on his own or with somebody else. <\/p>\n

\n\u201cSo he created a character almost from day one, and everybody was surprised by that.<\/p>\n

\n\u201cWhat was also amazing was how witty he was. He could create such a light tone and humour that it would relax all the other team members.\u201d<\/p>\n

\nHe said Bill was \u201chigh-energy\u201d and \u201cloved stepping in the middle of an action scene\u201d, saying: \u201cHe loved really dangerous things. He loved getting other people involved as a group.<\/p>\n

\n\u201cSo, slowly but surely, they all came together, and that was so nice to see happen.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\u2018Twisters\u2019, starring Glen Powell, 35, Anthony Ramos, 32, and Daisy Edgar-Jones, 26, as a new set of storm chasers is out in cinemas on 19 July.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
