Today, the FTC is reminding ASRock, Gigabyte, and Zotac that they\u2019re illegal.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">In fact, the FTC sent letters <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ftc.gov\/system\/files\/ftc_gov\/pdf\/asrock-warning-letter.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">to ASRock<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ftc.gov\/system\/files\/ftc_gov\/pdf\/gigabyte-warning-letter.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gigabyte<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ftc.gov\/system\/files\/ftc_gov\/pdf\/zotac-warning-letter.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Zotac<\/a> that suggest the FTC\u2019s concerns aren\u2019t just <strike>skin<\/strike> sticker-deep. Each letter tells the manufacturer to change its warranty and review its customer support practices to make sure they aren\u2019t illegally threatening your warranty.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">\u201cStaff would be concerned if GIGABYTE, in practice, denied warranty coverage based on the warranty provisions quoted above or any similar provision,\u201d reads part of one of the letters.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">As of today, each of these companies\u2019 warranties does include such a threat. The very first line in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asrock.com\/support\/index.us.asp?cat=Policy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ASRock\u2019s warranty<\/a> reads, \u201cManufacturer\u2019s warranty will be null and void if products are modified, damaged or otherwise tampered with, for example, the outer case is opened or additional optional parts\/components are installed\/removed.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\"><a href=\"https:\/\/member.aorus.com\/global\/productwarranty\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gigabyte includes<\/a>: \u201cIf the manufacturing sticker inside the product was removed or damaged, it would no longer be covered by the warranty.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">The particular right-to-repair law the FTC is invoking here isn\u2019t one of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/5\/28\/23738770\/right-to-repair-updates-laws\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the state-by-state ones<\/a> that are now taking effect \u2014 it\u2019s the federal Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act that attempts to keep companies from making bad warranties and misrepresenting them in the first place. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">\u201cThe Warranty Act prohibits warrantors of consumer products costing more than five dollars from conditioning their written warranties on a consumer\u2019s use of any article or service, such as repair service, which is identified by brand, trade, or corporate name, unless (1) the warranty states the article or service will be provided to the consumer for free, or (2) the warrantor has been granted a waiver by the Commission,\u201d the FTC writes.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">\u201cFTC investigators have copied and preserved the online pages in question, and we plan to review your company\u2019s written warranty and promotional materials after 30 days,\u201d the agency is telling each firm.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ifixit.com\/News\/74736\/warranty-void-stickers-are-illegal-in-the-us-what-about-elsewhere#:~:text=Warranty%20Void%20Stickers%20Are%20Illegal,What%20about%20Elsewhere%3F&amp;text=If%20you&#039;ve%20ever%20opened,those%20stickers%20aren&#039;t%20enforceable.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">iFixit has a blog<\/a> on how \u201cwarranty void if removed\u201d stickers may be legal in other parts of the world.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2024\/7\/3\/24191790\/asrock-gigabyte-zotac-ftc-warranty-void-right-to-repair\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ever seen one of those \u201cwarranty void if removed\u201d stickers covering the screw holes on a gadget?
