Don\u2019t call it a comeback because Josh Hartnett<\/strong><\/a> has been a bona fide heartthrob since the late \u201890s \u2014 but there\u2019s no denying the actor has been experiencing a major renaissance since stepping back into the spotlight over the past few years.<\/p>\n

Hartnett first rose to fame in the horror genre, making his debut as the son of Jamie Lee Curtis<\/strong> in 1998\u2019s Halloween H20: 20 Years Later<\/em>. He starred in The Faculty<\/em> that same year, portraying a student being pursued by his alien teachers. After his role as Trip Fontaine in 1999\u2019s The Virgin Suicides<\/em>, he shifted his focus to romantic comedies, appearing in films like 40 Days and 40 Nights<\/em> and Here on Earth<\/em>\u00a0before reaching A-list status with blockbusters like Pearl Harbor<\/em> and Black Hawk Down<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Hartnett\u2019s star continued to rise until the mid-2000s after he starred in Lucky Number Slevin<\/em> with Morgan Freeman<\/strong> and Bruce Willis<\/strong>. The actor was barely on screen for the next decade until he scored the lead role of Ethan Chandler in Showtime\u2019s Penny Dreadful<\/em>, which aired from 2014 to 2016.<\/p>\n

Hartnett first addressed his absence<\/a> in 2014, telling Details<\/em> magazine that his mental health began to suffer from his increased fame. \u201cI couldn\u2019t really go anywhere,\u201d he told the outlet at the time. \u201cI didn\u2019t feel comfortable in my own skin. I was alone. I didn\u2019t trust anyone. I\u2019m still finding my way through all that.\u201d<\/p>\n

He continued: \u201cWithin two weeks, I didn\u2019t have to struggle as an actor, although I think I\u2019ve made up for it now. I still get offered film and TV roles, luckily, but years ago, if I saw a role I wanted, there was a good chance I could grab it. When I see a role now, I\u2019ve got to fight for it. It\u2019s not bad. It\u2019s actually more rewarding. Depressing when something doesn\u2019t go your way, but only for a minute.\u201d<\/p>\n

While his on-screen career was on hiatus, Hartnett was busy building a family with wife Tamsin Egerton, with whom he shares four children. In May 2021, Hartnett told Yahoo that his break from Hollywood was mainly about allowing himself to focus on fatherhood. \u201cI started doing smaller films, [since] the films didn\u2019t take me away from the kids very often,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n

Ultimately, Hartnett said that keeping the industry \u201cat bay\u201d for a length of time was a lesson worth learning.<\/p>\n

\u201cLuckily, I think I hit onto it early on in my life,\u201d he told the Australian morning show Sunrise in 2021. \u201cIt\u2019s about creating a good home life and being able to do things that are wild and wonderful like making films, which is such a privilege.\u201d<\/p>\n

Now, Hartnett is ready to be back on top. He\u2019s appeared in guest TV roles like Black Mirror<\/em> and season 3 of The Bear,<\/em> and made a sweeping big screen return with last summer\u2019s Oppenheimer<\/em>, which won Best Picture at the 2023 Oscars. Next month, he\u2019ll star as a deranged father in M. Night Shyamalan\u2019s<\/strong> thriller Trap<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Good guy or villain meter:<\/strong> Hartnett plays a guy who steals his colleague and friend\u2019s life in this 80-minute long mind-bending episode. It\u2019s not great, but he does make some compelling arguments for swiping someone else\u2019s identity, so there\u2019s that?<\/p>\n

The synopsis:<\/strong> The film follows physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy<\/strong>) as he works on the top-secret Manhattan Project. He and a team of scientists spend years developing and designing the atomic bomb until their work comes to fruition on July 16, 1945, as they witness the world\u2019s first nuclear explosion. Hartnett plays Ernest Lawrence, one of Oppenheimer\u2019s colleagues. The duo have a falling out after Lawrence discovers Oppenheimer had an affair with the wife of his close friend, Richard Tolman (Tom Jenkins<\/strong>).<\/p>\n

Good guy or villain meter:<\/strong> Well, Lawrence did help create the first nuclear bomb, so he\u2019s not at the top of our good guy list. He\u2019s also not an outright antagonist in the film, either. And he did have some loyalty to his friends.<\/p>\n

\u2018The Bear\u2019 Season 3, Episode 3<\/h3>\n

Hartnett makes a cameo as Frank, the fianc\u00e9 of Cousin Richie\u2019s (Ebon Moss-Bachrach<\/strong>) ex-wife, Tiffany (Gillian Jacobs<\/strong>).<\/p>\n

Good guy or villain meter:<\/strong> We love Frank. We live for Frank. Not only does he earnestly apologize to Richie for not running his proposal by him before getting down on one knee, he\u2019s been good to Richie\u2019s daughter, Eva (Annabelle Toomey<\/strong>). He also blares Taylor Swift at full blast. 10\/10, no notes.<\/p>\n

Good guy or villain meter:<\/strong> Shyamalan is known for his plot twists, but prepare for Hartnett to play the most sinister and deranged you\u2019ve ever seen him. We\u2019re fairly sure he\u2019s a serial killer in this movie \u2014 at least, that\u2019s what the trailers lead us to believe \u2014 but fingers crossed he somehow comes out a hero, instead!<\/p>\n

Good guy or villain meter:<\/strong> TBD, but the synopsis leads Us<\/em> to believe we\u2019ll be rooting for Hartnett all the way in this one.<\/p>\n
