Eddie Murphy<\/strong> was famously awarded a lifetime achievement award<\/a> by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association in 2022, but it\u2019s clear the 63-year-old actor\u2014or as he prefers to be characterized, a \u201csupersensitive artist\u201d\u2014still has a lot of milestones he\u2019d like to hit. In an new interview, the star of upcoming Netflix film Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F<\/em><\/a> says that he\u2019s always wanted to make a very specific \u201cfake documentary,\u201d to the point that he even made a trailer for the as-yet-unmade film.<\/p>\n The revelation comes in an interview published Saturday<\/a> in the New York Times Magazine<\/em>, a conversation ostensibly supporting the July 3 release of the fourth film in the 40-year-old Beverly Hills Cop<\/em> franchise. \u201cWe\u2019ve been trying to develop another Beverly Hills Cop<\/em> since \u201996,\u201d Eddie Murphy says, after John Landis<\/strong>-directed Beverly Hills Cop III<\/em> failed to meet the star\u2019s expectations. \u201cIt didn\u2019t have the emotional hook that the other ones have,\u201d Murphy says. \u201cI didn\u2019t think the movie came out good.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cThere\u2019s been ten different scripts and a bunch of different producers,\u201d for a fourth Cop<\/em> film, Murphy says. “We just tried for years and years, and it wouldn\u2019t come together until we got Jerry [Bruckheimer]<\/a> back involved, the original producer. Jerry, he understood it the most because it\u2019s his movie, and it all came together.\u201d<\/p>\n Murphy has long expressed dissatisfaction with the film industry, telling Vanity Fair<\/em><\/a> in 2020 that he \u201cwas just so burnt out on the process of making a movie that if I was a little boy I would start crying.\u201d<\/p>\n The issue, he said then, was \u201cthe process of being on set in the movies, at the level that I was making movies from a really young age, and to be doing it constantly. Just the whole sitting in the trailer and waiting.\u201d<\/p>\n Not much appears to have changed for the star in the intervening four years, as he tells interviewer David Marchese,<\/strong> \u201cI never had joy\u201d during the filmmaking process.<\/p>\n “The actual being in a scene, that\u2019s a small part of the day. I love that \u2014 when we\u2019re on the set and you feel it clicking. But \u2018hurry up and wait\u2019: That\u2019s the movie business, and it is not fun.\u201d<\/p>\n Though he\u2019s the recipient of numerous awards<\/a>, Murphy also lampoons those ceremonies, telling Marchese, \u201cThe most horrible energy in the world is a room full of famous people going through their whole famous thing: who\u2019s the most famous and who\u2019s cool and who\u2019s not. I hate that feeling.\u201d<\/p>\n Murphy, who says that his work in The Nutty Professor<\/em> is some of his greatest (\u201cI can\u2019t think of another person that could do Nutty Professor<\/em>,\u201d he says), seems most engaged when talking about a film he has yet to make. \u201cThis one thing I\u2019ve been threatening to do for years called Soul, Soul, Soul<\/em>,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s like this fake documentary that I love.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s a Zelig<\/em> kind of thing, where it\u2019s this guy who\u2019s part of the rock\u2019 n\u2019 roll, R&B thing back in the \u201960s and worked with everybody; all these great moments, and he\u2019s attached to all of these things,\u201d Murphy says. He got as far as creating a trailer for the film, even showing it to writer, actor, and musician Donald Glover<\/strong><\/a>.<\/strong> \u201cHe was like: \u2018Yo, you got to make this movie. How do we make this movie?\u2019\u201d Murphy says.<\/p>\n And yet, Murphy has yet to pull the trigger on production, though \u201cI\u2019ve been right to where I was going to make it and then said, \u2018No, not right now.\u2019\u201d The issue, Murphy says, is that he feels \u201clike it\u2019s so self-indulgent, and only a few people would go see it \u2014 but they would laugh so hard.\u201d<\/p>\n And also, there\u2019s Murphy\u2019s aforementioned frustration with the process of filmmaking. Even for a dream project like Soul, Soul, Soul<\/em>, \u201cit\u2019s so much work,\u201d Murphy says. \u201cThat\u2019s been the deterrent. But I tell you, one day, I\u2019ll do it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
