Instagram\u2019s new \u201cAI Studio\u201d will let creators make AI chatbot versions of themselves, and Meta is starting to roll it out as an \u201cearly test\u201d in the US, CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced on his broadcast channel on Thursday.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
As part of the test, \u201cyou might start seeing AIs from your favorite creators and interest-based AIs in the coming weeks on Instagram,\u201d according to Zuckerberg. \u201cThese will primarily show up in messaging for now, and will be clearly labeled as AI.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
Zuckerberg shared a few videos of conversations with creator-made AI chatbots as examples. From a creator\u2019s Instagram, you can tap a \u201cMessage\u201d button to kick off a conversation. A notice at the top says that the messages are generated by AI and \u201csome may be inaccurate or inappropriate.\u201d (Let\u2019s hope Meta\u2019s systems can prevent these creator-made AIs from saying something terrible.) Meta also includes \u201cAI\u201d in front of the creator\u2019s name and<\/em>, at least for now, a \u201cbeta\u201d tag after the person\u2019s name. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cWe\u2019ve been working closely with creators to build these so they\u2019re helpful in answering the questions they get from their followers and can chat with people in a way that\u2019s useful and fun,\u201d Zuckerberg says. \u201cIt\u2019s early days and the first beta version of these AIs so we\u2019ll keep working on improving them, and make them available to more people soon.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n In a new interview<\/a>, Zuckerberg talked more about the company\u2019s AI strategy. He says, \u201cWe think people want to interact with lots of different people and businesses and there need to be a lot of different AIs that get created to reflect people\u2019s different interests.\u201d Meta wants to let creators and eventually small businesses \u201ccreate an AI for themselves\u201d to interact with their communities and customers. \u201cWe think that\u2019s going to create a much more compelling experience and just be more dynamic and useful than just having a single thing that people use.\u201d He also says Meta will let people make AI characters that aren\u2019t necessarily representations of themselves. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n Broadly, this is a vision the company has had for a while \u2014 Zuckerberg made similar remarks in an interview with my colleague Alex Heath last year<\/a> when the company announced its Meta AI assistant and celebrity-themed chatbots<\/a>. Now that the company is actually testing AI Studio, we\u2019ll see if people really do want to chat with AI versions of their favorite creators.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
