After Democratic strategist Keith Edwards urged Threads users to check the Instagram setting limiting political content from people they don\u2019t follow, many people noticed theirs had abruptly changed. Journalist Taylor Lorenz confirmed<\/a> that her settings had changed as well and noted that they appeared to reset every time she force-closed the Instagram app, which we\u2019ve also confirmed on our phones.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Meta says the behavior was unintentional. \u201cThis was an error and should not have happened,\u201d Meta communications director Andy Stone posted on Threads. \u201cWe\u2019re working on getting it fixed.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/div>\n Meta introduced the opt-out setting<\/a> that limits recommendations of \u201cpolitical content\u201d to Instagram and Threads in March. At the time, the company said it wasn\u2019t limiting political content from reaching people on Instagram but instead simply giving users the ability to stop seeing posts that don\u2019t interest them. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cOur goal is to preserve the ability for people to choose to interact with political content, while respecting each person\u2019s appetite for it,\u201c Instagram head Adam Mosseri said in a Threads post announcing the change. When Threads first rolled out, Mosseri told The Verge<\/em>\u2019s Alex Heath<\/a> that the app would \u201cnot do anything to encourage\u201d politics or \u201chard news.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n The opt-out setting, however, was on by default, and Instagram never sent users in-app notifications alerting them of the change. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n
