{"id":107266,"date":"2024-06-25T15:44:36","date_gmt":"2024-06-25T15:44:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/entertainment.runfyers.com\/index.php\/2024\/06\/25\/the-notebooks-gena-rowlands-diagnosed-with-alzheimers\/"},"modified":"2024-06-25T15:44:36","modified_gmt":"2024-06-25T15:44:36","slug":"the-notebooks-gena-rowlands-diagnosed-with-alzheimers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/entertainment.runfyers.com\/index.php\/2024\/06\/25\/the-notebooks-gena-rowlands-diagnosed-with-alzheimers\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;The Notebook&#8217;s Gena Rowlands Diagnosed With Alzheimer&#8217;s"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><em><span>The Notebook<\/span><\/em><span> star Gena Rowlands has been diagnosed with Alzheimer&#8217;s disease, her son and the movie&#8217;s director, Nick Cassavetes, reveals.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Cassavetes, who directed the 2004 Nicholas Sparks adaptation starring <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.etonline.com\/people\/ryan-gosling\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ryan Gosling<\/a><span> and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.etonline.com\/people\/rachel-mcadams\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rachel McAdams<\/a><span>, spoke with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/the-notebook-star-gena-rowlands-has-alzheimers-8668642\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Entertainment Weekly<\/em><\/a><span> about his 93-year-old mother&#8217;s tragic health setback, which mirrored that of her on-screen character, Allie.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/alzheimers-disease\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20350447\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mayo Clinic<\/a><span> defines Alzheimer&#8217;s disease as a &#8220;brain disorder&#8221; that &#8220;causes the brain to shrink and brain cells to eventually die.&#8221; This leads to &#8220;a gradual decline in memory, thinking, behavior and social skills.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Rowlands played the older version of McAdams&#8217; role, showing the character battling Alzheimer&#8217;s as her longtime love Noah, played by Gosling and also James Garner in the older years, read her the story of two star-crossed lovers. It turns out to eventually be the story of Allie and Noah&#8217;s romance, prompting heartbreaking scenes of the two lovers at the end of the movie.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"shortcode shortcode-image content-in\"><figcaption class=\"content-in\"><span>Gena Rowlands as Allie in The Notebook.<\/span> &#8211; <span class=\"shortcode-image__credit\">New Line Cinema<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span>&#8220;I got my mom to play older Allie, and we spent a lot of time talking about Alzheimer&#8217;s and wanting to be authentic with it, and now, for the last five years, she&#8217;s had Alzheimer&#8217;s,&#8221; Cassavetes told<\/span><em><span> EW<\/span><\/em><span> of Rowlands. &#8220;She&#8217;s in full dementia. And it&#8217;s so crazy \u2014 we lived it, she acted it, and now it&#8217;s on us.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Gena&#8217;s mother, Lady Rowlands, also suffered from the disease.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;I went through that with my mother, and if Nick hadn&#8217;t directed the film, I don&#8217;t think I would have gone for it \u2014 it&#8217;s just too hard. It was a tough but wonderful movie,&#8221; Gena told <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oprah.com\/spirit\/gena-rowlands-aha-moment\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><em>O Magazine<\/em> in 2004<\/a><span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Gena&#8217;s last credited role was in 2017 for the short <\/span><em><span>Unfortunate Circumstances<\/span><\/em><span>. In addition to her role in <\/span><em><span>The Notebook<\/span><\/em><span>, she also had memorable roles in <\/span><em><span>Hope Floats, The Skeleton Key, Paris, I Love You, Something to Talk About<\/span><\/em><span>, and much more.
