It\u2019s the first time Microsoft has been charged with antitrust violations in the EU for 15 years, following two big cases related to Windows Media Player and Internet Explorer bundling.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">\u201cThe European Commission has informed Microsoft of its preliminary view that Microsoft has breached EU antitrust rules by tying its communication and collaboration product Teams to its popular productivity applications included in its suites for businesses Office 365 and Microsoft 365,\u201d says the European Commission in a <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/ip_24_3446\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement today<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Microsoft has now been handed a statement of objections, a list of the EU\u2019s concerns over its Teams bundling. The software giant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/8\/31\/23853517\/microsoft-teams-unbundling-europe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">unbundled Teams from Office<\/a> in Europe last year in an attempt to address regulator concerns, and then <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2024\/4\/1\/24117785\/microsoft-teams-office-split-eu-regulation-antitrust-investigation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">spun off Teams from Office 365<\/a> as its own separate app globally. The unbundling hasn\u2019t been enough to prevent charges, though.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">\u201cWe are concerned that Microsoft may be giving its own communication product Teams an undue advantage over competitors, by tying it to its popular productivity suites for businesses,\u201d says Margrethe Vestager, the head of competition policy in Europe. \u201cIf confirmed, Microsoft\u2019s conduct would be illegal under our competition rules. Microsoft now has the opportunity to reply to our concerns.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Microsoft says it is working with the EU to find solutions. \u201cHaving unbundled Teams and taken initial interoperability steps, we appreciate the additional clarity provided today and will work to find solutions to address the Commission\u2019s remaining concerns,\u201d says Microsoft president Brad Smith in a statement to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/eb83bb45-84b3-4c58-9589-684029d23243\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Financial Times<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">EU lawmakers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/7\/27\/23797305\/microsoft-teams-eu-antitrust-investigation-office-bundling-slack\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">first opened<\/a> a Microsoft antitrust investigation into Teams bundling last year, following an anti-competitive complaint filed by Slack in July 2020. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2020\/7\/22\/21333989\/slack-microsoft-eu-competition-complaint-teams-office\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Slack\u2019s original complaint<\/a>\u00a0alleged that Microsoft had \u201cillegally tied\u201d its Microsoft Teams product to Office and is \u201cforce installing it for millions, blocking its removal, and hiding the true cost to enterprise customers.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">If Microsoft is found guilty of antitrust violations, the firm could face a fine of up to 10 percent of the company\u2019s annual worldwide turnover. In 2009 Microsoft was also forced to implement a browser ballot box in its Windows operating system to ensure users were presented with a choice of web browsers, after years of Microsoft bunding Internet Explorer with Windows.
