Donald Trump<\/strong><\/a> enthusiastically endorsed displaying the Ten Commandments in schools (end elsewhere) over the weekend, despite quite famously violating at least four of the said 10, and one one of them literally thousands of times. On Truth Social, he told<\/a> his followers: \u201cI LOVE THE TEN COMMANDMENTS IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS, PRIVATE SCHOOLS, AND MANY OTHER PLACES, FOR THAT MATTER. READ IT \u2014 HOW CAN WE, AS A NATION, GO WRONG??? \u2026 BRING BACK TTC!!! MAGA2024.\u201d And on Saturday, speaking at a gathering of the evangelical group the Faith and Freedom Coalition, he asked<\/a> the crowd, \u201cHas anyone read the \u2018Thou shalt not steal\u2019? I mean, has anybody read this incredible stuff? It\u2019s just incredible. They don\u2019t want it to go up. It\u2019s a crazy world.\u201d<\/p>\n Setting aside the fact that he talks about the Ten Commandments like they\u2019re some hot new indie band he just discovered, it\u2019s obviously extremely rich for Trump to back displaying the religious directives given that he\u2019s spent his entire adult life flagrantly disregarding them. For instance, he apparently wasn\u2019t concerned with abiding by his favorite one (\u201cThou shalt not steal\u201d) when he helped himself<\/a> to an array of government documents that were not his to take upon leaving the White House in 2021, or when he used his charitable foundation\u2019s funds to buy<\/a>, among other things, a six-foot portrait of himself. He\u2019s also publicly taken the Lord\u2019s name in vain<\/a>.<\/p>\n Additionally, Trump ran afoul of a different commandment (\u201cRemember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy\u201d) when he posted<\/a> the following message on Easter: \u201cHAPPY EASTER TO ALL, INCLUDING CROOKED AND CORRUPT PROSECUTORS AND JUDGES THAT ARE DOING EVERYTHING POSSIBLE TO INTERFERE WITH THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION OF 2024, AND PUT ME IN PRISON, INCLUDING THOSE MANY PEOPLE THAT I COMPLETELY & TOTALLY DESPISE BECAUSE THEY WANT TO DESTROY AMERICA, A NOW FAILING NATION, LIKE \u2018DERANGED\u2019 JACK SMITH,<\/strong> WHO IS EVIL AND \u2018SICK.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n Perhaps most significantly, there\u2019s also the commandment that says, \u201cThou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor,\u201d i.e: don\u2019t lie. Which Trump literally does<\/a> all the<\/a> time<\/a>.<\/p>\n And of course, one cannot forget the whole \u201cThou shalt not commit adultery\u201d line. Even if one were to buy Trump\u2019s claim that he did not have an affair with Stormy Daniels<\/strong>\u2014and just paid her $130,000<\/a> for the fun of it\u2014he did have an<\/a> affair<\/a> with Marla Maples<\/strong><\/a> while he was married to Ivana Trump. (In a deposition last year, he boldly claimed to not recall if he\u2019d started seeing Maples before he was divorced, saying<\/a>, \u201cIt was towards the end of the marriage. So I don\u2019t know, really. It could be a lapover, but I don\u2019t really know.\u201d)<\/p>\n Despite Trump\u2019s long history of engaging in behavior many actual Christians would find problematic at best<\/a>, he\u2019s managed to convince<\/a> large swaths of evangelicals that he\u2019s basically the second coming of Jesus, in part by embracing<\/a> Christian nationalism (and killing Roe v. Wade<\/em>). As for whether or not Louisiana\u2019s new Ten Commandments law survives a likely appeal<\/a> to the Supreme Court, that remains to be seen, though clearly there are some people on the bench<\/a> who could be convinced it\u2019s a great idea, separation of church and state be damned. One thing we probably can<\/em> count on? That a line of Trump-branded Ten Commandments, with his signature slapped on the bottom, are in the offing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
