John Waters refuses to hire actors who use the word \u2018journey\u2019<\/p>\n
The \u2018Pink Flamingos\u2019 director, 78, renowned for gross-out scenes in his transgressive arthouse work, says he hates the phrase as it is \u201coverused\u201d by privileged stars \u2013 and he only thinks people fleeing war zones have the right to use it.<\/p>\n
He told People when asked if he would ever adapt anyone else\u2019s book into a film: \u201cNever. I have never even read a script that I didn\u2019t write. The fun of it for me, if there\u2019s ever fun, is thinking it up. <\/p>\n
\u201cI wouldn\u2019t know how to direct somebody else\u2019s stuff. I\u2019m a writer. Once I think it up \u2013 \u2018Oh, now I have to do it\u2019. <\/p>\n
\u201cA lot of it to me is writing the script. Then, I\u2019ve played all the characters in my mind for a year before we even get there. <\/p>\n
\n\u201cWhoever gets the parts, the stars, don\u2019t ever have to read. They just, if they ever use the word \u2018journey\u2019, I never hire them.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cI hate that word. It\u2019s so overused, especially in LA. You\u2019re not on a journey. \u201cPeople that are escaping Ukraine are on a journey, not winning the (Independent) Spirit Award.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nJohn added when he looks back on his career and life his biggest regret in life is smoking.<\/p>\n
\nHe said: \u201cOne regret in my life is smoking cigarettes. It\u2019s terrible. I know many of my friends are dying of cancer right now.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cI haven\u2019t had a cigarette in 7,782 days \u2013 roughly. I write it down every day. But I smoked five packs a day.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cNot always, but long enough. Camel Cools. Oh, even saying that word makes me cough.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nAnd when asked which of his films he thinks he\u2019ll be most remember for, the maverick director said: \u201cThey\u2019re all exactly the same to me. I think my best movie is \u2018Serial Mom\u2019. <\/p>\n
\n\u201cThe best Divine movie is \u2018Female Trouble\u2019. But \u2018Pink Flamingos\u2019 still caused the most trouble. <\/p>\n
\n\u201cThey\u2019re all the same to me. They have the same message: \u2018Mind your own business. What people use against you, turn into a style, and you\u2019ll win.\u2019<\/p>\n
\n\u201cEvery movie\u2019s about that.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
