Amy Poehler<\/a> says it is \u201cpainful\u201d when parents hit the stage where they question if they are \u201cneeded\u201d in their children\u2019s lives.<\/p>\n

The 52-year-old \u2018Parks and Recreation\u2019 actress is raising two teen boys \u2013 Archie, 15, and 13-year-old Abel \u2013 who she has with her actor ex-husband Will Arnett<\/a>, 54, and has now opened up about her views on the transition mothers and fathers go through as their kids grow.<\/p>\n

She told People: \u201cThat\u2019s a painful process as an adult, as a parent. I relate just to that feeling of, \u2018In what way am I needed?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

But despite the transition being \u201cdifficult\u201d, Amy added about ultimately finding it exciting and inspiring: \u201cI actually love that period. I find it really satisfying and exciting and fulfilling and difficult and challenging.\u201d<\/p>\n

Amy has just finished her voice role work as the emotion Joy on the \u2018Inside Out 2\u2019 animated movie, which sees its 13-year-old main character Riley battle a jumble of inner emotions voiced by other stars \u2013 including sadness \u2013 as she navigates puberty and high school. <\/p>\n

\nAmy recently opened up about parenting on Dax Shepard\u2019s \u2018Armchair Expert\u2019 podcast, saying it isn\u2019t always easy giving advice to her kids. <\/p>\n

\nShe said: \u201cSometimes I see them disconnect when I\u2019m talking.\u201d<\/p>\n

\nThe actress added the only way her children openly express their issues with her is by her stopping herself from telling tales from her own childhood to keep them on track and identify with their issues.<\/p>\n

\nShe said: \u201cSo I\u2019ve got teens now and I am learning that the way to keep them talking is to not do the second part \u2013 to do the part of, \u2018That happened to me too\u2019.<\/p>\n

\n\u201cAs well intentioned and as sensitive and thought out and connected as the second part is I think it gets kids feeling, like, expectation \u2013 they wanna do it for you. <\/p>\n

\n\u201cI just find for me, when I start to (give advice), it\u2019s where I lose them.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
