Dame Imelda Staunton was \u2018inconsolable\u2019 when she heard Queen Elizabeth had died while she was playing the monarch on \u2018The Crown\u2019<\/p>\n
The 68-year-old actress portrayed Her Majesty in the final two seasons of Netflix\u2019s royal drama \u2013 gaining nominations for the British Academy Television Award for Best Actress and Golden Globe Award for Best Actress for her work \u2013 and said she and her castmates were warned on set just before the monarch\u2019s passing aged 96 in September 2022 was announced there may be \u201cbad news\u201d on the way.<\/p>\n
She told The Daily Telegraph about breaking down when it was confirmed the Queen was dead: \u201cWe\u2019d filmed in the morning, then at lunchtime the first AD (assistant director) came up to me and said, \u2018We just have to warn you, we might hear some bad news later.\u2019<\/p>\n
\u201cHe said, \u2018Do you want to carry on or go home?\u2019<\/p>\n
\u201cI said, \u2018No, I\u2019ll carry on.\u2019<\/p>\n
\n\u201cAnd then we went home at 6pm, and the news came, and I was completely inconsolable. <\/p>\n
\n\u201cThe ground really was shaking. So that was new territory for me.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nFilming was suspended on \u2018The Crown\u2019 for the 10 days of national mourning for the late monarch, and resumed the day after the Queen\u2019s funeral.<\/p>\n
\nIt started with Imelda shooting a scene of the Queen unveiling a plaque and she said it was \u201cdifficult\u201d for her castmates to see her dressed as the dead monarch.<\/p>\n
\nShe added: \u201cWe had a number of supporting actors that day, and they were looking at the Queen, and I think that was more difficult for them than it was for me.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cI do remember it was very quiet on the set.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nImelda added playing the Queen was \u201ca great place to be\u201d as it put all her skills to the test.<\/p>\n
\nShe added that as research for the part she buried herself in \u201cwatching footage, working on her voice, movement, things like that \u2013 absorbing her somehow\u201d.<\/p>\n
\nThe acting veteran told the Telegraph: \u201cBeing the Queen was a great place to be\u2026 being wholly another person is a very interesting journey. <\/p>\n
\n\u201cAs an actor that\u2019s what we do, and you want to bring everything you can to it, but some parts don\u2019t demand that.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nImelda received a coveted damehood in King Charles\u2019 Birthday Honours List earlier this month after a career of more than 40 years that has seen her reach national treasure status thanks to roles in projects from \u2018Harry Potter\u2019 to \u2018Vera Drake\u2019, in which she played the famed backstreet abortionist.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
