Discovery makes a play for older viewers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple\">Though it once seemed as if <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2022\/10\/12\/23400943\/warner-bros-cartoon-network-layoffs-david-zaslav\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cartoon Network<\/a> might end up taking quite a bit of damage as a consequence of Warner Bros.\u2019 merger with Discovery, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/1\/24\/23570101\/justin-roiland-rick-and-morty-allegations-domestic-battery-grooming\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Adult Swim<\/a> president Michael Ouweleen says that\u2019s far from the case as the network gears up to expand its adult-oriented content block.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple\"><a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2023\/03\/adult-swim-unicorn-warriors-eternal-animation-warner-bros-discovery-1235311351\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Deadline<\/em> reports<\/a> that Cartoon Network plans to start shifting over to Adult Swim programming one hour earlier \u2014 up from 8PM ET to 7PM ET \u2014 beginning in May as the network makes a more concerted play for viewers older than 18.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple\">Speaking to <em>Deadline<\/em>, Ouweleen said that while the animation industry definitely went through a tumultuous period that lasted throughout 2022, there\u2019s since \u201cbeen a correction\u201d and emphasized that \u201cthe animation bubble hasn\u2019t burst but it\u2019s certainly calmed down a little bit.\u201d Ouweleen, who oversees Cartoon Network, Adult Swim, and Boomerang, said the networks have had little issue sourcing new projects and talent and stressed that the Discovery merger\u2019s been beneficial because Discovery understands \u201cstrong brands.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple\">\u201cThe DNA we share with Discovery is, they fully understand certain genres, so they understand how we operate in that way,\u201d Ouweleen said. \u201cThe one learning curve for them, and for me, conversely, is that most of Discovery\u2019s content is very quickly made and they can make tons of it. Animation takes two years and hundreds of people. It\u2019s still hand-made, though obviously we have digital tools \u2026 Our stuff takes longer to make, but also airs forever.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple\">As Ouweleen sees it, that last point is of particular importance as it plans to debut new series like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/23661842\/adult-swim-unicorn-warriors-eternal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Genndy Tartakovsky\u2019s <em>Unicorn: Warriors Eternal<\/em><\/a> on both Adult Swim and HBO Max, a strategic decision meant to expose the show to as broad an audience as possible. As resource-intensive as producing animation can be, once it\u2019s in the can, the network can theoretically run it indefinitely and potentially cultivate new followings in the process. <em>Unicorn: Warriors Eternal <\/em>and <em>Rick and Morty <\/em>are very different kinds of shows, but Ouweleen pointed to the latter\u2019s success as something Warner Bros. Discovery wants to recreate by launching new shows on multiple platforms.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple\">\u201cIf we were launching <em>Rick and Morty<\/em> today, on any one platform, I don\u2019t know that we could make it a hit,\u201d Ouweleen said. \u201cThe benefit that we\u2019ve had is, we can use linear and use Max over seasons to build fandom.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple\">As <em>Deadline<\/em> notes, <em>Aqua Teen Hunger Force <\/em>was responsible for pulling in about 4 percent of Adult Swim\u2019s viewership in 2022 despite the fact that the show hasn\u2019t produced new episodes since 2015. While this reality might have come as a surprise to Discovery\u2019s executives, it\u2019s also a big part of why the company is so \u201cbullish\u201d about going bigger with its Adult Swim programming.
