Ilya Sutskever, OpenAI\u2019s co-founder and former chief scientist, is starting a new AI company focused on safety. In a post on Wednesday<\/a>, Sutskever revealed Safe Superintelligence Inc. (SSI), a startup with \u201cone goal and one product:\u201d creating a safe and powerful AI system.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n The announcement<\/a> describes SSI as a startup that \u201capproaches safety and capabilities in tandem,\u201d letting the company quickly advance its AI system while still prioritizing safety. It also calls out the external pressure AI teams at companies like OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft often face, saying the company\u2019s \u201csingular focus\u201d allows it to avoid \u201cdistraction by management overhead or product cycles.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cOur business model means safety, security, and progress are all insulated from short-term commercial pressures,\u201d the announcement reads. \u201cThis way, we can scale in peace.\u201d In addition to Sutskever, SSI is co-founded by Daniel Gross, a former AI lead at Apple, and Daniel Levy, who previously worked as a member of technical staff at OpenAI. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n As OpenAI pushes forward with partnerships with Apple<\/a> and Microsoft<\/a>, we likely won\u2019t see SSI doing that anytime soon. During an interview with Bloomberg<\/em><\/a>, Sutskever says SSI\u2019s first product will be safe superintelligence, and the company \u201cwill not do anything else\u201d until then.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
