Matthew McConaughey<\/strong><\/a> is looking back at his two-year break from Hollywood.<\/p>\n After starring in several rom-coms, the 54-year-old Oscar-winning actor took a break from acting to avoid being typecast and moved back to his home state of Texas where he considered quitting Hollywood altogether.<\/p>\n In a new conversation with Glen Powell<\/strong><\/a> for Interview<\/em> magazine<\/a>, Matthew<\/strong> opened up about his break from Hollywood before returning in 2010s and landing more serious roles in projects including The Lincoln Lawyer<\/em>, True Detective<\/em>, and Dallas Buyers Club<\/em>.<\/p>\n Keep reading to find out more\u2026<\/em><\/strong><\/span> \u201cDude, it was scary. I had long talks with my wife about needing to find a new vocation. \u2018I think I\u2019m going to teach high school classes. I think I\u2019m going to study to be a conductor. I think I\u2019m going to go be a wildlife guide,\u2019\u201d Matthew<\/strong> recalled. \u201cI honestly thought, \u2018I stepped out of Hollywood. I got out of my lane.\u2019 The lane Hollywood said I should stay in, and Hollywood\u2019s like, \u2018Well, f\u2013k you, dude. You should have stayed in your lane. Later.\u2019\u201d <\/p>\n He continued, \u201cIt was scary. The days are long \u2014 the sense of insignificance. But I made up my mind that that\u2019s what I needed to do, so I wasn\u2019t going to pull the parachute and quit the mission I was on. But it was scary, because I didn\u2019t know if I was ever going to get out of the desert.\u201d <\/p>\n Matthew<\/strong> went on to admit that he knew it would be difficult to shake off being typecast in just rom-coms, especially when box office success was the only way to land more roles.<\/p>\n \u201cFor me, going back to A Time to Kill<\/em>, after I first had a big success in a major studio picture and became famous, I remembered that the Thursday before that movie opened, there\u2019s 100 scripts out there that I would\u2019ve done, and 99 of them I could not book. Over that one weekend, 99 noes became 99 yeses,\u201d Matthew<\/strong> recalled. \u201cI was like, \u2018What? Three days ago, I\u2019d have done any of these! And now you\u2019re asking me which one I want to do?\u2019 It was a hell of a shocking thing. I chucked on a backpack and went to Peru for three weeks just so I could hear myself think.\u201d <\/p>\n \u201cHave you had to go, \u2018I would\u2019ve done any of these roles, but now I\u2019ve got to be discerning?\u2019 I\u2019ve had similar runs where I\u2019ve said no to things, where I\u2019m like, \u2018Am I being too safe, or am I ferociously chasing what I want?\u2019\u201d Matthew <\/strong>continued. \u201cBecause sometimes you can get paralyzed in the no\u2019s. I\u2019ve had plenty of times in my career where I\u2019m like, \u2018I don\u2019t know what I want to do, I just know I don\u2019t want to do that.\u2019\u201d <\/p>\n In another recent interview, Matthew<\/strong> shared how fatherhood made him a better actor<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
\u201cI\u2019ve usually zigged when I felt like Hollywood wanted me to zag,\u201d Matthew<\/strong> shared. \u201cWhen I had my rom-com years, there was only so much bandwidth I could give to those, and those were some solid hits for me. But I wanted to try some other stuff. Of course I wasn\u2019t getting it, so I had to leave Hollywood for two years.\u201d <\/p>\n
