\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n Baseball legend Willie Mays<\/strong><\/a> has sadly passed away.<\/p>\n On Tuesday (June 18), the San Francisco Giants announced that Willie<\/strong>, nicknamed the \u201cSay Hey Kid,\u201d died earlier that day at the age of 93.<\/p>\n \u201cIt is with great sadness that we announce that San Francisco Giants Legend and Hall of Famer Willie Mays passed away peacefully this afternoon at the age of 93,\u201d the Giants tweeted<\/a>.<\/p>\n Keep reading to find out more\u2026<\/em><\/strong><\/span>Willie<\/strong> played as a center fielder in the MLB for 22 seasons starting in 1951 before retiring in 1973. He was a two-time league MVP, a 24-time All Star, and is considered one of the greatest players in baseball history.<\/p>\n He was elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1979.<\/p>\n In 2015, then-President Barack Obama<\/strong><\/a> honored Willie<\/strong> with the Presidential Medal of Freedom.<\/p>\n \u201cHis quiet example while excelling on one of America\u2019s biggest stages helped carry forward the banner of civil rights,\u201d Obama<\/strong> said at the time. \u201cIt\u2019s because of giants like Willie that someone like me could even think about running for president.\u201d<\/p>\n The MVP award for the best player of the World Series was named after Willie<\/strong> in 2017.<\/p>\n Our thoughts are with Willie Mays<\/strong>\u2018 loved ones during this difficult time.
