\u2022\u00a0Joe Alwyn is on the cover<\/a> of this weeks Sunday Times Style section to promote the new Yorgos Lanthimos film, Kinds of Kindness<\/i>, and he offers up some choice quotes on his breakup with Taylor Swift for the first time. <\/p>\n
\u2022\u00a0For the most part he keeps it cute, but kind of pointed at Swifties who seem to believe that Alwyn did not want to let Swift “be bejeweled”: “\u201cAs everyone knows, we together – both of us, mutually – decided to keep the more private details of our relationship private. It was never something to commodify and I see no reason to change that now.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u2022\u00a0The interviewer notes that Alwyn is a nice guy, if a bit guarded and rehearsed when it comes to answers about Swift and the fallout of their relationship. <\/p>\n\u2022\u00a0When asked if he\u2019s listened to the album, Alwyn starts giving a reply and then stops and restarts his answer. He ends up saying, \u201cI would hope that anyone and everyone can empathize and understand the difficulties that come with the end of a long, loving, fully committed relationship of over six and half years.<\/b> That is a hard thing to navigate. What is unusual and abnormal in this situation is that, one week later, it\u2019s suddenly in the public domain and the outside world is able to weigh in.<\/b>\u201d<\/p>\n
\u2022 Alwyn’s reaffirming of the length of their relationship brings into question the timeline that has formed around the breakup. <\/p>\n
\u2022\u00a0The breakup was first confirmed by Entertainment Tonight on April 8, 2023<\/a> (Matty Healy’s birthday for those of us keeping score at home), with a source reaffirming that this breakup had happened a “few weeks” beforehand. On May 3, 2023 we received the first reports<\/a> that Swift and Healy were dating (coming just months after Swift performed her song “Anti-Hero” live at a 1975 show BY THE WAY, FOR THOSE KEEPING SCORE AT HOME). Alwyn’s confirmation that there was just a week between the breakup and the story breaking publicly is…interesting. For those keeping score at home. <\/p>\n
\u2022\u00a0In the next paragraph Alwyn goes on to say, \u201cyou have something very real suddenly thrown into a very unreal space: tabloids, social media, press, where it is then dissected, speculated on, pulled out of shape beyond recognition\u2026there is always going to be a gap between what is known and what is said. I have made my peace with that.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n
\u2022 The writer points out the \u201cextraordinary situation\u201d of Swift on one side with an \u201conline behemoth\u2026ready to attack perceived enemies,\u201d and a \u201c(relatively) regular Joe who, exiled from the machine post-break,up, [who] seems only comfortable with sticking to a script.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u2022\u00a0Alwyn does say that the break-up was, \u201ca little over a year ago now and I feel fortunate to be in a really great place in my life, professionally and personally. I feel really good.<\/b>\u201d He also would not respond to questions from the interviewer on whether he was still in touch with Swift or if he was dating again. Alwyn says, \u201cI\u2019m sure you can appreciate, given the level of noise and scrutiny about my past relationship, why I wouldn\u2019t want to just open the door to things like that right now.<\/b>\u201d<\/p>\n
\u2022\u00a0The rest of the interview is perfectly nice. He raves about the creative environment Yorgos Lanthimos creates on his sets, talks about how he likes working with Emily (aka Emma) Stone. He talks about how he loves his friends and family and has, \u201cbrilliant, authentic people\u201d in his life<\/b>. <\/p>\n
\u2022\u00a0He says he stays away from social media. \u201cI try and dial that volume down. I was obviously made aware of it and think that mistreating anyone, whether it\u2019s in person or behind the anonymity of a keyboard, is shameful.\u201d <\/p>\n
\u2022 The one tidbit Alwyn happily refutes to the author of the piece is that – despite the claims of pub owners who seem intent on wringing out their small claim to fame via a song on Swift\u2019s latest album<\/a> – Alwyn has never been to Vauxhall or the Black Dog pub<\/a>.<\/b>
