Martin&#8217;s fictional history book,\u00a0<\/span><em><span>Fire &amp; Blood,<\/span><\/em><span> may have an idea of what to expect in the upcoming eight-episode run, including a number of fan-favorite events and epic battles. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.etonline.com\/house-of-the-dragon-showrunner-says-season-2-has-the-biggest-sequences-the-show-has-ever-seen\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">As showrunner Ryan Condal told ET<\/a><span> at the show&#8217;s New York City premiere on June 3, &#8220;We&#8217;re being true to the story that&#8217;s written in the book.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In <\/span><em><span>House of the Dragon<\/span><\/em><span>&#8216;s first season, audiences were treated to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.etonline.com\/house-of-the-dragon-the-8-biggest-most-jaw-dropping-changes-from-george-rr-martins-fire-blood-book\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">several surprising moments<\/a><span> that even loyal book readers didn&#8217;t see coming. Those changes were due, in large part, to a difference in Martin&#8217;s storytelling method with <\/span><em><span>Fire &amp; Blood <\/span><\/em><span>versus the <\/span><em><span>Game of Thrones<\/span><\/em><span> series.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"shortcode shortcode-image content-in\"><figcaption class=\"content-in\"><span>&#8216;House of the Dragon&#8217; season 2 character art.<\/span> &#8211; <span class=\"shortcode-image__credit\">HBO Max<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span>Unlike <\/span><em><span>GOT<\/span><\/em><span>,\u00a0<\/span><em><span>House of the Dragon<\/span><\/em><span>&#8216;s source material\u00a0is written not as a narrative, but as a scholarly document\u00a0penned by\u00a0Archmaester Gyldayn including an unreliable narration of historical events from a cast of varying sources.\u00a0The style of Martin&#8217;s telling has allowed show writers plenty of room for creative liberties, expanding throwaway details into fully formed plots, developing characters and relationships, and even inventing jaw-dropping new scenes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>While some fans were <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.etonline.com\/game-of-thrones-fan-petition-demands-hbo-to-remake-final-season-125339\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">underwhelmed by differences<\/a><span> between the book and TV versions of <\/span><em><span>Game of Thrones<\/span><\/em><span>, <\/span><em><span>HOTD<\/span><\/em><span>&#8216;s updates were largely well received by not only viewers, but by Martin himself. Back in 2022, the celebrated author raved that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.etonline.com\/house-of-the-dragon-why-paddy-considine-refuses-to-watch-king-viserys-big-episode-192405\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Paddy\u00a0Considine&#8217;s portrayal of\u00a0King Viserys<\/a><span> was &#8220;much more powerful and tragic and fully-fleshed than my own version.&#8221; Additionally, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.etonline.com\/house-of-the-dragon-eve-best-teases-season-2-stuns-in-sultry-snake-dress-at-shows-premiere\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Eve Best<\/a><span>&#8216;s standout &#8220;f**k you&#8221; moment as &#8220;The Queen Who Never Was&#8221; &#8212; Princess Rhaenys &#8212; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.etonline.com\/house-of-the-dragon-eve-best-on-rhaenys-escape-and-whats-at-stake-in-the-finale-exclusive\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">at Aegon II&#8217;s coronation<\/a><span>\u00a0was dreamed up entirely by\u00a0<\/span><em><span>House of the Dragon<\/span><\/em><span>\u00a0show creatives, as it&#8217;s absolutely nowhere to be found in\u00a0<\/span><em><span>Fire &amp; Blood<\/span><\/em><span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;I think\u00a0there are different demands in\u00a0the\u00a0show, given that it&#8217;s an adaptation\u00a0of\u00a0a history book,&#8221; Condal told ET ahead of season 2. &#8220;But, no, the\u00a0plan is to faithfully render George&#8217;s history as as it&#8217;s been given in\u00a0the\u00a0text.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"shortcode shortcode-image content-in\"><figcaption class=\"content-in\"><span>Ryan Condal at the &#8220;House of the Dragon&#8221; NYC Red Carpet Premiere held at Hammerstein Ballroom at the Manhattan Center on June 3, 2024 in New York City, New York.<\/span> &#8211; <span class=\"shortcode-image__credit\">Arturo Holmes\/WireImage<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span>Harry Collett &#8212; who plays\u00a0Prince Jacaerys &#8220;Jace&#8221; Velaryon, the eldest son of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.etonline.com\/house-of-the-dragon-emma-darcy-and-matt-smith-on-daemon-and-rhaenyras-season-2-relationship-226621\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Emma D&#8217;Arcy&#8217;s Princess Rhaenyra<\/a><span> &#8212; is among those expected to embark on a major journey this season.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;Expect a lot, because it&#8217;s just such a good series,&#8221; the actor told ET at the NYC premiere. &#8220;I&#8217;m not just saying that &#8217;cause I&#8217;m biased, but it is genuinely so good. Now, I haven&#8217;t read\u00a0the\u00a0book, but they&#8217;re two different medias, so you can&#8217;t always have exactly\u00a0the\u00a0same thing that was in\u00a0the\u00a0book as on\u00a0the\u00a0script. The actress behind\u00a0Lady Baela Targaryen &#8212; the eldest daughter of Matt Smith&#8217;s Daemon Targaryen &#8212; encourages diehards to embrace the show as its own &#8220;version&#8221; of the story.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;I see why it&#8217;s so frustrating when your favorite books are, like, adapted not how you like,&#8221; she said to ET. &#8220;Try and find the glimmers that we as actors have really tried to bring out from the books. Try to find it where you can.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"shortcode shortcode-image content-in\"><figcaption class=\"content-in\"><span>Bethany Antonia at the &#8220;House of the Dragon&#8221; NYC Red Carpet Premiere held at Hammerstein Ballroom at the Manhattan Center on June 3, 2024 in New York City, New York.<\/span> &#8211; <span class=\"shortcode-image__credit\">Kristina Bumphrey\/Variety via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span>As for the upcoming plot points, trailers have teased the forthcoming <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.etonline.com\/house-of-the-dragon-season-2-hbo-drops-two-new-trailers-222056\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">war between the Black Council and the Green Council<\/a><span> amid an ongoing dispute over the rightful heir to the throne following the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.etonline.com\/house-of-the-dragon-fans-react-to-king-vicerys-shocking-appearance-and-driftmark-family-battle\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">death of King Viserys<\/a><span> at the end of season 1. Meanwhile, Rhaenyra and her <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.etonline.com\/house-of-the-dragon-recap-most-shocking-fan-reactions-to-rhaenyras-relationship-choices-in-episode\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">uncle-turned-husband<\/a><span>, Daemon, appear to be at an impasse in their marriage.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;We meet them both in a state of deep grief,&#8221; D&#8217;Arcy, who plays Rhaenyra, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.etonline.com\/house-of-the-dragon-emma-darcy-and-matt-smith-on-daemon-and-rhaenyras-season-2-relationship-226621\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">told ET<\/a><span>. &#8220;[And] they&#8217;re two bereaved people who really struggle to communicate.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;They&#8217;re not good communicators,&#8221; D&#8217;Arcy said of Rhaenyra and Daemon, &#8220;and actually, I think something about their dynamic means that they are not willing to show weakness to one another.\u00a0This is sort of a fundamental flaw in their relationship. They don&#8217;t want to be seen to be weak.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;So I think&#8230; it&#8217;s gonna be bumpy,&#8221; D&#8217;Arcy added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Smith feels Daemon&#8217;s motivations are fueled by a sense of duty and honor, but they ultimately drive a wedge between him and\u00a0Rhaenyra.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;We pick up in a very complicated situation,&#8221; Smith\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.etonline.com\/house-of-the-dragon-season-2-trailer-its-an-all-out-dragon-war-215833\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said of season 2<\/a><span>. &#8220;There&#8217;s a lot of grief flying around in the air and I think, you know, Daemon is doing things that he thinks are for the benefit of the family. [Things] he&#8217;s sort of duty bound to do really.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>However, Smith said that Daemon&#8217;s actions and ambition &#8220;invariably creates a deeper fragmentation between&#8221; them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;In many ways, he&#8217;s sort of on his own path,&#8221; Smith said, adding, &#8220;They&#8217;re a complicated bunch.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"shortcode shortcode-image content-in\"><figcaption class=\"content-in\"><span>Matt Smith as Daemon and Emma D&#8217;Arcy as Rhaenyra in &#8216;House of the Dragon&#8217; season 2.<\/span> &#8211; <span class=\"shortcode-image__credit\">Warner Bros. <\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span>D&#8217;Arcy also explained that the &#8220;political designs have never felt more personally important&#8221; this season.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;I think for Rhaenyra, particularly, her inheritance, sitting on the Iron Throne, her name in the Targaryen histories, all of these feel like a way to remain closer to her father. Her\u00a0<\/span><em><span>late<\/span><\/em><span>\u00a0father. So yeah, sitting on the throne is a fundamental personal need now, as well as a sort of political aim,&#8221;\u00a0D&#8217;Arcy explained.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>As for King Aegon, who has usurped the throne from his elder half-sister, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.etonline.com\/house-of-the-dragon-tom-glynn-carney-on-what-to-expect-from-king-aegon-ii-in-season-2-exclusive\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">actor\u00a0Tom Glynn-Carney said<\/a><span> that his character growth will mostly be about Aegon &#8220;finding [his] feet&#8221; and &#8220;getting to grips with what it is to step into the shoes of the king, wear the crown, sit on the Iron Throne &#8212; and actually have purpose.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;We see Aegon, for the first time ever, have purpose,&#8221; he added excitedly.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"shortcode shortcode-image content-in\"><figcaption class=\"content-in\"><span>Tom Glynn-Carney as King Aegon in &#8216;House of the Dragon&#8217; season 2.<\/span> &#8211; <span class=\"shortcode-image__credit\">HBO<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span>Condal has also teased that this season is also set to feature some of the biggest and boldest action sequences in the franchise&#8217;s history.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;They&#8217;re two of the biggest things we&#8217;ve ever filmed,&#8221; Condal shared. &#8220;They involve lots of dragons and fire and action, and it&#8217;s exciting!\u00a0I&#8217;m excited for everyone to see it.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<p><em><span>House of the Dragon<\/span><\/em><span>\u00a0is a prequel series to HBO&#8217;s megahit\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.etonline.com\/tv\/game-of-thrones\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Game of Thrones<\/em><\/a><span>.
