The Parisian singer and actress \u2013 who was born in Nazi occupied Paris in 1944 – had battled lymphatic cancer since 2004 and had to undergo several years of treatment<\/p>\n
This week, her son confirmed his mother passed away.<\/p>\n
Taking to Instagram, Thomas Dutronc – whose father is singer Jacques Dutronc \u2013 simply wrote: \u201cMum is gone (sic).\u201d<\/p>\n
In 2015, Fran\u00e7oise was placed in an induced coma for weeks following a fall.<\/p>\n
\nSix years later, the singer admitted she felt \u201cclose to the end\u201d of her life after a tumour had been found in her ear.<\/p>\n
\nAfter bursting onto the music scene in 1962 with the song \u2018Tous les gar\u00e7ons et les filles\u2019 (All the Girls and Boys\u2019), Fran\u00e7oise became a cultural icon who inspired artists like Bob Dylan, David Bowie and Sir Mick Jagger. <\/p>\n
\nDylan famously penned a poem about Fran\u00e7oise.<\/p>\n
\nThe singer became renowned for her melancholy ballads, and symbolised France\u2019s Y\u00e9-y\u00e9 (yeah yeah) pop movement.<\/p>\n
\nFran\u00e7oise became a household name with earworms such as \u2018It Hurts to Say Goodbye\u2019 (\u2018Comment te dire adieu\u2019) and \u2018My Friend the Rose\u2019 (\u2018Mon amie la rose\u2019).<\/p>\n
\n\u2018All Over The World\u2019 – an English-language version of her track \u2018Dans le monde entier\u2019 – became the singer\u2019s biggest UK hit, reaching number 16 in the charts in June 1965.<\/p>\n
\nFran\u00e7oise worked with several renowned songwriters, including Serge Gainsbourg, Patrick Modiano, Michel Berger and Catherine Lara, and collaborated with artists such as Iggy Pop and Blur.<\/p>\n
\nAside from her work in the music industry, the songwriter ventured into the film world, appearing in Roger Vadim\u2019s \u2018Ch\u00e2teau en Su\u00e8de\u2019 (1963) and John Frankenheimer\u2019s \u2018Grand Prix\u2019 (1966), and made a brief appearance in Jean-Luc Godard\u2019s \u2018Masculin f\u00e9minin\u2019 (1966).<\/p>\n
\nShe was also a style muse for the likes of Yves Saint Laurent, Andr\u00e9 Courr\u00e8ges and Paco Rabanne, and once admitted the press in Britain in the Swinging Sixties were more fascinated with her French girl aesthetic than her music.<\/p>\n
\nSpeaking to The New York Times in 2018, she said: \u201cWhen I came to London to perform at the Savoy in the mid-60s, I was well aware that the British press was more interested in the way I dressed than in my songs.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nAfter news broke of her passing, a number of stars have paid tribute to Fran\u00e7oise.<\/p>\n
\nThe Lord of the Rings\u2019 actor Elijah Wood posted a black-and-white photo of the singer, and added the caption: \u201cau revoir, Fran\u00e7oise Hardy.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\u2018Fight the Power\u2019 rapper Chuck D took to social media and wrote: \u201cOver in France \u2026 us beat diggers found some vintage stuff in Fran\u00e7oise Hardy records #RestInBeats.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
