Billy Crystal<\/a>, 76, who said at the ceremony at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Los Angels that Mel\u2019s \u201cfearless genius and boundary-pushing humour\u201d have been his \u201cguiding light\u201d in showbusiness \u201csince day one\u201d.<\/p>\nBilly went on: \u201cMel is a genius who believes that comedy should push boundaries, challenge societal taboos and yes, be a little vulgar when the mood calls for it. <\/p>\n
\u201cAnd with Mel, the mood often calls for it. Mel is one of the big reasons that I have a life in comedy.<\/p>\n
\nDad-of-four Mel said about being only the world\u2019s fourth PEGOT winner: \u201cIt\u2019s a big deal \u2013 I\u2019m just an ET.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nHe also joked about how he had no idea what a Peabody was for: \u201cI want to tell you, I wasn\u2019t sure when they said, \u2018You\u2019ve won a Peabody.\u2019 <\/p>\n
\n\u201cI said, \u2018No s***?\u2019 <\/p>\n
\n\u201cI thought, \u2018Well, maybe it was for being the best looking guy in show business.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
\nThe \u2018Spaceballs\u2019 and \u2018Young Frankenstein\u2019 filmmaker also made a gag about how he is \u201cnot humble\u201d.<\/p>\n
\nHe added: \u201cHumility is not a part of my vocabulary. I don’t even know how to spell. I think humility probably starts with a \u2018U\u2019 \u2013 no idea.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nBut he added more seriously: \u201cThis is a great honour and it has been won by a distinguished group of esteemed, well-worth winning this award and I feel a little, I don\u2019t know: \u2018You really want me to be part of this? These are people that go to good restaurants.\u2019<\/p>\n
\n\u201cAnyway, but seriously, I thank you for this prestigious and fabulous award.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nMel ended with a gag about having sold all his previous trophies, adding: \u201cI promised the George Foster Peabody people, I will not sell this one.\u201d <\/p>\n
\nMel won his Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for \u2018The Producers\u2019 in 1969, then completed his EGOT in 2001 when the stage version of the musical comedy won three Tonys. <\/p>\n
\nHe has won a total of three Grammys and four Emmys throughout his career.<\/p>\n
\nThe world\u2019s other three PEGOT winners are Barbra Streisand, 82, Rita Moreno, 92, and the late director of \u2018The Graduate\u2019 Mike Nichols, who was killed in 2014 aged 83 by a heart attack.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
