\u2018The Lord of the Rings\u2019 acting veteran, who turned 85 in May, says his mortality is on his mind so much he now only takes work he knows will be quality in case he shuffles off after it\u2019s done.<\/p>\n
He told The Times: \u201cYou are aware that this life doesn\u2019t go on for ever.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf you want to know that you are mortal you just have to look at your address book. <\/p>\n
\u201cAnd so when a script comes through, or the hint of an offer, you think, \u2018This might be my last job. No. I\u2019m not doing that.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
\nIan is now playing hard-living raconteur Falstaff on London\u2019s West End in \u2018Player Kings\u2019, the director Robert Icke\u2019s three-hour-plus condensation of Shakespeare\u2019s Henry IV, Parts I and II.<\/p>\n
\nHe added: \u201cSo if Falstaff is my last job, I\u2019d better get it right, hadn\u2019t I?\u201d<\/p>\n
\nDespite admitting he\u2019s now dwelling on death, Ian added he hopes \u2018Frank and Percy\u2019 \u2013 the play he and his friend Roger Allam, 70, took to the West End last year, will become a film.<\/p>\n
\nAnd he said he has heard there are \u201cstirrings in Tolkien land\u201d after it was recently announced that \u2018LOTR\u2019 director Peter Jackson, 62, will produce and Andy Serkis, 60, will direct a new film in the franchise called \u2018The Hunt for Gollum\u2019, which is set to be released in 2026. <\/p>\n
\nWhen asked if he could reprise his role as the wizard Gandalf in the movie, Ian said that thanks to his part as Falstaff, he\u2019s already got the long white locks for the part. <\/p>\n
\nHe added: \u201cI haven\u2019t shaved in months.\u201d <\/p>\n
\nThe Times said he admitted he\u2019s heard Gandalf will feature in the upcoming \u2018LOTR\u2019 installment, but he added: \u201cThere is no script, there is no offer, there is no plan.\u201d <\/p>\n
\nWhen asked if he would be interested if he was once again offered the part he joked: \u201cIf I\u2019m alive.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
