Bruce Springsteen<\/a>, 74, made it big with its hit \u2018Born in the USA\u2019.<\/p>\nHe told Page Six it was not until Lance Freed, the son of influential DJ Alan Freed, came to his aid that his career took off again \u2013 after the publisher heard his music with the band Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes.<\/p>\n
Steven added at the premiere of a documentary about his life, titled \u2018Stevie Van Zandt: Disciple\u2019: \u201c(Lance) said, \u2018Listen man, people don\u2019t write like this anymore. I want to help you out, what can I do?\u2019<\/p>\n
\u201cSo, he administered my publishing \u2013 gave me a big chunk of money that saved my life.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nA year after he left the E Street Band, Steven wrote a song called \u2018Sun City\u2019 that lambasted the South African government, with the video featuring cameos from his former bandmate Bruce as well as Bono, Darlene Love, George Clinton and others.<\/p>\n
\nHe says he thinks his political activism \u201cscared the hell out of everyone\u201d and left him out in the cold in the entertainment industry.<\/p>\n
\nSteven added: \u201cI intended to politicise our entire industry and I\u2019m happy about that, (but) at the expense of commercial success, which is a complicated story.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nThe guitarist said he has \u201cnever had any commercial success\u201d and \u201ccan\u2019t blame\u201d the record companies for staying away from him \u2013 admitting \u201ca combination of things\u201d left him \u201cin the wilderness for seven years\u201d.<\/p>\n
\nAs well as Lance\u2019s help, Steven was able to land financial security thanks to his role as Tony Soprano\u2019s right-hand man Silvio Dante on HBO\u2019 shit mafia drama \u2018The Sopranos\u2019.<\/p>\n
\nHe hailed the role as a \u201cnew rebirth\u201d for his career and life, adding: \u201cThat was a gift from (\u2018Sopranos\u2019 creator) David Chase. <\/p>\n
\n\u201cHe handed me a new craft, right on time.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nSteven admitted that at the time he took the role in the late-1990s he \u201cwasn\u2019t looking at a whole lot of choices\u201d at the time.<\/p>\n
\nAfter taking the part, he also rejoined the E Street Band, with his acting career continuing with his lead role as a former gangster in the comedy-drama TV show \u2018Lilyhammer\u2019.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
