Boston Dynamics has its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/24132451\/boston-dynamics-atlas-robot-retirement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Atlas robot<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2024\/4\/23\/24138663\/teslas-optimus-robot-will-start-performing-useful-tasks-by-the-end-of-this-year\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tesla is pursuing robotics<\/a>, while companies like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2024\/3\/15\/24101791\/mercedes-robot-humanoid-apptronik-apollo-manufacturing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mercedes<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/3\/20\/23648343\/agility-robotics-digit-next-gen-bipedal-bot\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Amazon<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2024\/1\/18\/24043065\/bmw-figure-robotics-humanoid-robot-workers-deployment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BMW<\/a> are or will be testing robots for industrial use. But those are all very expensive robots performing tasks in controlled environments. In the home, they might still be far off. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Enter Apple. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2024-04-03\/apple-explores-home-robots-after-abandoning-car-efforts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mark Gurman at <em>Bloomberg <\/em>has said<\/a> its robotics projects are under the purview of former Google employee John Giannandrea, who has been in charge of Siri and, for a time, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2020\/12\/8\/22163939\/apple-self-driving-car-john-giannandrea-ai-siri\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Apple Car<\/a>. With the car project canceled, Vision Pro launched, and \u201cApple Intelligence\u201d around the corner, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/newsletters\/2024-06-09\/apple-wwdc-ai-announcements-will-enable-home-robot-ar-glasses-camera-airpods-lx7jem9f?srnd=undefined\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">is that the next big thing<\/a>?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">According to his information, any humanoid Apple robot is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/newsletters\/2024-04-07\/apple-aapl-future-products-could-include-robots-and-smart-home-push-lupinmna\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">at least a decade away<\/a>. There\u2019s also the cute ball-bot, Ballie, that Samsung has shown off at a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2020\/1\/6\/21054353\/samsung-ballie-robot-ai-assistant-ces-2020\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">couple of CES shows<\/a>. I\u2019m very skeptical of all of that, but it has a handle, and I do <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/12\/30\/24019922\/lg-cinebeam-qube-4k-uhd-projector-webos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">love a piece of technology with a built-in handle<\/a>. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">I still want a sci-fi future filled with robotic home assistants that save us from the mundane tasks that keep us from the fun stuff we would rather do. But we don\u2019t all live in the pristine, orderly abode featured in <a href=\"https:\/\/go.redirectingat.com\/?xs=1&amp;id=1025X1701640&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DYBfSX3QiqDM&amp;xcust=___vg__p_23794754__t_w__r_https:\/\/www.google.com\/__d_D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Samsung\u2019s Ballie video<\/a> or the videos Apple produces showing its hardware in personal spaces. Many normal homes are dens of robot-confounding chaos that tech companies will have a hard time accounting for when they create robots designed to follow us or autonomously carry out chores.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">There are other paths to take. Take the Ring Always Home Cam, which will <a href=\"https:\/\/go.skimresources.com\/?id=1025X1701640&amp;xs=1&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DKk4HOGa257k\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">be very noisy<\/a> judging from the demo videos, but it could also be useful and even good. While putting aside the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2020\/9\/25\/21455197\/amazon-ring-drone-home-security-surveillance-sidewalk-halo-privacy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">not-insignificant privacy implications<\/a> for a moment, it seems promising to me mostly because of the mobility and that it\u2019s only designed to be a patrolling security camera. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">That kind of focused functionality means it\u2019s predictable, which is what makes single-purpose gizmos and doodads work. After some experimentation, my smart speakers are where they hear me consistently or are the most useful, and I can put my robot vacuums in the rooms I know I\u2019ll keep clean enough that they won\u2019t get trapped or break something (usually).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">The robot vacuums I have \u2014 the Eufy Robovac L35 and a Roomba j7  \u2014  do an okay job, but they sometimes need rescuing when they find my cat\u2019s stringy toys or eat a paperclip (which are somehow always on the floor even though I never, ever actually need one or even know where we keep them).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">I have a kid, see, and preparing the way for them in other parts of the house is just adding more work to the mix. That\u2019s fine for me because the two rooms in their charge are the ones that need vacuuming the most, so they\u2019re still solving a problem, but it waves at the broader hurdles robotic products face. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">And it\u2019s not all that clear that AI can solve those problems. Moving inside the house and interacting with objects is a trickier problem, but companies like Google and Toyota have seen success using generative AI training approaches for robots that \u201clearn\u201d how to do things like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/9\/19\/23880507\/toyota-research-ai-robots-breakfast\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">make breakfast<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/7\/28\/23811109\/google-smart-robot-generative-ai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">quickly sort items<\/a> with little to no explicit programming. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">It\u2019ll be years, maybe even decades, before Apple or anyone else can bring us anything more than clumsy, half-useful robots that blunder through our homes, being weird, frustrating, or broken.
