While urging countries to make bigger commitments to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions, Guterres said that the private sector \u2014 particularly tech and media \u2014\u00a0needs to step up action. Companies that have pledged to reach net zero emissions, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2024-05-15\/microsoft-s-ai-investment-imperils-climate-goal-as-emissions-jump-30\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">like Google<\/a>, could move further <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2024\/5\/15\/24157496\/microsoft-ai-carbon-footprint-greenhouse-gas-emissions-grow-climate-pledge\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">away from their climate goals now that they\u2019re obsessed with developing AI tools<\/a>. Only Google replied on the record but didn\u2019t answer our question about how much it earns from fossil fuel companies\u2019 advertising. The company pointed to its <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/google-ads\/answer\/11221321?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">climate change denial policy<\/a> in an email to <em>The Verge. \u201c<\/em>Generally speaking, this policy (as with most of our policies) does not block specific types of advertisers on our platform, provided their ads comply with all of our policies,\u201d Google spokesperson Michael Aciman said in the email. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Earlier this year, researchers from the nonprofit <a href=\"https:\/\/counterhate.com\/research\/new-climate-denial\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Center for Countering Digital Hate<\/a> published a report documenting a new form of climate denial flourishing on YouTube. Instead of just attacking climate science, the content casts undue doubt on solutions like renewable energy. It also found that Google was running ads on that kind of misleading content.
