Owning Wrexham AFC sometimes causes Rob McElhenney<\/strong><\/a> and Ryan Reynolds<\/strong><\/a>\u2019 stress levels to rise in a very specific way \u2014 especially when it comes to the last game of their football season.<\/p>\n

\u201cThinking about and talking about Stockport being the last game of the season, I can feel two styes making their way up and into my eyelids,\u201d McElhenney, 47, said during the Thursday, June 6, episode of Welcome to Wrexham<\/em><\/a>. Reynolds, 47, hit back, saying he would \u201cskip the stye\u201d and offered another suggestion.<\/p>\n

\u201cJust go right for the good old-fashioned 1950s sort of stress, just straight to the chest,\u201d he added while pounding on his torso. (McElhenney has revealed in previous episodes that he often gets styes in his eye when overly stressed.)<\/p>\n

The Wrexham AFC co-owners weren\u2019t major players in this week\u2019s Welcome to Wrexham<\/em> episode, leaving the drama to the players. One in particular, James McClean<\/strong>, was quite a \u201ccontroversial\u201d player for the team to sign \u2014 and the team executives explained why.<\/p>\n

\u201cJames McClean is an iconic figure,\u201d Wrexham executive director Humphrey Ker<\/strong> said during Thursday\u2019s episode. \u201cWhen his name was first mentioned to me, my eyebrows shot up that a player like that would be interested in coming to us.\u201d<\/p>\n

McClean, 35, had a long-standing football career, even playing for teams in the Premier League, before joining Wrexham in August 2023. After receiving 10 yellow cards during the 2023-2024 season, McClean faced a two-game suspension. He also received a barrage of hate and \u201cdeath threats\u201d on social media after refusing to wear a poppy flower, a symbol of support for the British Army.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know what I would like to be remembered for, me football,\u201d McClean said during his confessional. \u201cBut reality tells me that I\u2019ll be viewed quite different.\u201d<\/p>\n

The athlete further explained that because he\u2019s from Derry, Ireland,<\/a> the poppy flower symbolizes when the \u201cBritish occupation in Ireland came about\u201d causing \u201churt\u201d and \u201cpain\u201d within the country.<\/p>\n
