But when it came to the car\u2019s software-based functions \u2014 the infotainment system, the various controls, smartphone integration, and so on \u2014 \u201cit was death by a thousand cuts,\u201d Flasch said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 -tracking-1 leading-160 dark:text-white selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Flasch said he experienced problems with scheduling charging at home and had trouble getting the car to get along with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2022\/6\/6\/23156741\/ios-16-carplay-apple-wwdc-hvac-deeper-integration\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Apple CarPlay<\/a>. Owners of VW\u2019s electric ID cars all over the world have reported problems with infotainment screens, range calculations, buggy smartphone connections, charging, and other features that are far more seamless on other companies\u2019 cars. And VW\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.volkswagenag.com\/en\/news\/2021\/03\/volkswagen-is-accelerating-transformation-into-software-driven-m.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">long-promised<\/a> addition of over-the-air updates, increasingly common on other cars, is just now starting as of this month, but still not in North America.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 -tracking-1 leading-160 dark:text-white selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Flasch is an old hand at EVs, having owned several, including a Tesla Model S he drove for 100,000 miles. (\u201cI essentially lived out of that car for nine months during the worst of COVID,\u201d he said.) So much so that VW Group CEO Oliver Blume is due to outline a revised software strategy at the carmaking giant\u2019s supervisory board meeting on Thursday, December 15th. The meeting has been described by outlets <a href=\"https:\/\/europe.autonews.com\/automakers\/vw-ceo-present-software-reality-check-board-dec-15-report-says\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">like <em>Automotive News<\/em><\/a> as a \u201creality check,\u201d where Blume will be expected to present a more grounded plan to realize VW\u2019s ambitious and expensive electric dreams.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component block clear-both md:float-left md:mr-30 md:w-[320px] lg:-ml-100\">\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-pullquote mb-20\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup relative pb-8 font-polysans text-28 font-medium tracking-1 leading-120 dark:text-white selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:selection:bg-blurple bg-[length:1px_1.2em] bg-repeating-lines-dark dark:bg-repeating-lines-light\">\u201cThe Volkswagen Group is undergoing the biggest transformation in its history.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 -tracking-1 leading-160 dark:text-white selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">\u201cThe Volkswagen Group is undergoing the biggest transformation in its history,\u201d a VW Group spokesperson said in an email. \u201cOur NEW AUTO Group strategy sets out a clear roadmap up to 2030 for us to become a sustainable software-oriented mobility provider. We have to transform ourselves and acquire completely new competencies if we want to play a leading role in tomorrow\u2019s mobility market. Software will become the new differentiator.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 -tracking-1 leading-160 dark:text-white selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Blume knows the cost of not getting this right. He took the CEO job in September <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2022\/7\/22\/23274382\/volkswagen-ceo-herbert-diess-replace-porsche-oliver-blume\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">after his predecessor Herbert Diess was fired<\/a> over clashes with unions and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-07-25\/porsches-postponed-by-buggy-software-cost-vw-s-ceo-his-job#xj4y7vzkg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">software issues<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 -tracking-1 leading-160 dark:text-white selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">The Volkswagen Group\u2019s software problems are well-documented and reflective of wider issues facing many legacy automakers. It\u2019s not just a conglomerate that includes Audi, Porsche, Ducati, and Bentley that\u2019s either the biggest or second-biggest car company in the world, depending on how Toyota is performing that quarter. It\u2019s the car company undertaking one of the most aggressive pivots to electric vehicles, driven in part to seek penance for <a href=\"https:\/\/jalopnik.com\/your-guide-to-dieselgate-volkswagens-diesel-cheating-c-1731857018\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">getting caught cheating on diesel emissions in 2015<\/a>. That even included founding Electrify America, its public EV charging subsidiary.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 -tracking-1 leading-160 dark:text-white selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">In the years since, the VW Group has committed to phasing out its internal combustion engines <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/sustainable-business\/vw-end-sales-combustion-engines-europe-by-2035-2021-06-26\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in Europe by 2035<\/a>, building six battery \u201cgigafactories\u201d in Europe meant to supply millions of EVs, and electrifying all of its brands, even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lamborghini.com\/en-en\/news\/lamborghini-announces-its-roadmap-for-electrification-direzione-cor-tauri\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lamborghini<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 -tracking-1 leading-160 dark:text-white selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Plus, automakers like VW have high aspirations for new revenue sources beyond just selling cars, and those, too, depend on software. These include features like connected cars, leveraging data, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2022\/7\/13\/23206999\/car-subscription-nightmare-heated-seats-remote-start\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">subscription features<\/a>, integrating e-commerce and augmented reality into vehicles, virtual assistants, and other features that could redefine how we think of cars entirely.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 -tracking-1 leading-160 dark:text-white selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">To achieve any of that, Volkswagen must get the software right. It can mean the programs that govern more complex functions like semi-autonomous driver assistance systems, battery management, navigation, over-the-air updates, and interactions with various charging networks. It can also refer to more conventional features that drivers have spent the last two decades getting increasingly accustomed to, like infotainment systems and smartphone integration.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 -tracking-1 leading-160 dark:text-white selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">In Volkswagen\u2019s case, it\u2019s \u201call of the above.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 -tracking-1 leading-160 dark:text-white selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">The original ID.3, a compact hatchback sold in Europe and other markets as a close sibling of America\u2019s ID.4 crossover, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2020\/6\/11\/21288572\/volkswagen-id3-ev-delay-software-vw-herbert-diess\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">was delayed at launch over software problems<\/a>. The other ID cars <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jiemian.com\/article\/8507100.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">have received considerable backlash in China<\/a> over issues like sudden blank infotainment screens. Volvo and Polestar have turned their UX over to Google\u2019s Android Automotive, and Ford\u2019s Android-based Sync infotainment stack <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2022\/4\/26\/23042056\/f-150-lightning-ford-ev-jim-farley\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">arrives next year<\/a>. But it was more than just a car; it was meant to usher in the successor to the MEB platform, called SSP, and was to debut a whole new range of technologies for VW, including a high level of autonomous driving and new software-based business models.
