Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan<\/strong><\/a> is defending Taylor Swift<\/strong><\/a> and the length of her two-hour, 31-track album, The Tortured Poets Department<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u201cTaylor Swift is one of the most gifted pop artists of all time,\u201d Corgan, 57, told Irish Times<\/em><\/a> in a new interview published Monday, June 3. \u201cHow is it a bad thing that she\u2019s releasing more music? I can\u2019t follow that \u2026 You can go on Spotify and just skip it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Citing his band\u2019s own two-hour record released in 2023, Corgan told the outlet that he can empathize with Swift, 34, over criticism about putting out hours-long albums.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople complained about the length of my last album, Atum<\/em>,\u201d he continued. \u201cI thought, \u2018Well, just go make your own playlist. Just listen to the record one time \u2013 rag over the six or 10 songs you like and make your own record.\u2019 Why is this such a strange concept?\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tTaylor Swift shocked Swifties when she announced her 11th studio album during the 2024 Grammys. While accepting the award for Best Pop Vocal Album, Swift celebrated her 13th career win by confirming that her new album is coming sooner than fans might have thought. \u201c[The way I can celebrate] is by telling you a secret [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Corgan went on to use longtime friend and fellow musician Sin\u00e9ad O\u2019Connor<\/strong> as an example of why lengthy projects should be looked at as something positive. (O\u2019Connor died<\/a> in July 2023. She was 56 years old.)<\/p>\n

\u201cLet\u2019s go back to Sin\u00e9ad for a second,\u201d he said. \u201cNow that Sin\u00e9ad\u2019s gone, would it be a bad thing if somebody turned up tomorrow and said, \u2018Hey, I just found this tape, and there\u2019s enough for 20\u2032 \u2013 or 30 or 50 \u2013 \u2018Sin\u00e9ad songs.\u2019 Would that be a bad thing?\u201d<\/p>\n

Swift announced<\/a> she was releasing her 11th studio album while accepting the Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Album in February.<\/p>\n

\u201c[The way I can celebrate] is by telling you a secret that I\u2019ve been keeping from you for the past two years, which is that my brand new album comes out April 19th,\u201d she told the crowd during her acceptance speech. \u201cIt\u2019s called The Tortured Poets Department<\/em> and I\u2019m going to go post the cover right now backstage.\u201d<\/p>\n

Though Swifties thought they were just getting one new record, many fans were both shocked and delighted when Swift revealed that TTPD<\/em> was actually a surprise double album<\/a> just hours after its release.<\/p>\n
