Two months after Beyonc\u00e9<\/b><\/a> released her version of \u201cJolene\u201d on her <\/span>Cowboy Carter<\/span><\/i> album, <\/span>Dolly Parton<\/b><\/a> admitted it was \u201cvery bold\u201d for her to put her own spin on the classic song.<\/p>\n Dolly, 78, explained that she knew Beyonc\u00e9, 42, was covering her 1973 country hit for the album, though revealed she didn\u2019t know the \u201cSingle Ladies\u201d singer was changing the lyrics<\/a> to make the song her own.<\/p>\n \u201cWhen they said she was gonna do \u2018Jolene,\u2019 I expected it to be my regular one, but it wasn\u2019t,\u201d Dolly told E! News<\/em><\/a> about the song, which came out on the same day as the album on March 29. Despite admitting that it was brave of Beyonc\u00e9 to change the song, Dolly insisted that she loves \u201cwhat she did to it.\u201d<\/p>\n The \u201cIslands in the Stream\u201d singer went on to note that songwriters \u201clove the fact that people do your songs no matter how they do them.\u201d<\/p>\n Not only did Beyonc\u00e9 cover \u201cJolene\u201d for the album, but she also recruited Dolly to record an introduction for the song. \u201cHey, miss Honey Bey. It\u2019s Dolly P. You know that hussy with the good hair you sang about?<\/a> Reminded me of someone I knew back when. Except she has flaming locks of auburn hair,\u201d she said at the beginning of the track. \u201cBless her heart. Just a hair of a different color, but it hurts just the same.\u201d<\/p>\n The introduction then led into Beyonc\u00e9\u2019s cover, in which she told Jolene she was \u201cwarning you, don\u2019t come for my man.<\/a>\u201d The new lyrics gave the song a very different tone than Dolly\u2019s version, which had her begging Jolene to \u201cplease don\u2019t take my man.\u201d<\/p>\n While Dolly seemed to think Jolene was a threat in her version, Beyonc\u00e9 made it clear she wasn\u2019t intimidated by the other woman in the 2024 track. \u201cTakes more than beauty and seductive stares\/To come between a family and a happy man,\u201d she sings. \u201cJolene, I\u2019m a woman too\/Th\u0435 games you play are nothing new\/So you don\u2019t want no heat with me, Jolene.\u201d<\/p>\n Dolly also weighed in on the new lyrics, telling the outlet that she fully approved of the \u201cHalo\u201d singer\u2019s changes. \u201cShe wasn\u2019t gonna go beg some other woman like I did,\u201d she said. \u201c\u2018Don\u2019t steal my man.\u2019 S\u2013t, get out here, bitch.
