Normani<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s album has been a long time in the making \u2014 six years, in fact.<\/p>\n

The former Fifth Harmony<\/a> member first tweeted <\/a>that she had decided on her album title in 2018, the same year that she and the rest of the group \u2014 Ally Brooke<\/strong>, Lauren Jauregui<\/strong> and Dinah Jane<\/strong> \u2014 went their separate ways. (Camila Cabello<\/strong> had exited the group in 2016.) She also kicked off her career as a solo artist that year with \u201cLove Lies,\u201d a single featuring Khalid<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In the years since, Normani teamed with Sam Smith<\/strong> for \u201cDancing With a Stranger,\u201d threw it back to \u201990s R&B with \u201cMotivation,\u201d opened for Ariana Grande<\/strong> on the Sweetener World Tour<\/em> and linked up with Megan Thee Stallion<\/strong> for \u201cDiamonds\u201d from the Birds of Prey<\/em> soundtrack.<\/p>\n

The one thing she didn\u2019t do during that time? Release the album.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tLike a certain 2010s boy band, Fifth Harmony was formed on a reality competition series \u2014 and like that group, they\u2019ve stayed busy in the years after their hiatus. Fifth Harmony\u2018s story began in 2012, when all five of its members \u2014 Ally Brooke, Camila Cabello, Normani, Dinah Jane and Lauren Jauregui \u2014 auditioned for [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Normani left fans hanging until February 21, 2024. That was the day she finally shared the project title, Dopamine<\/em><\/a>, along with the artwork. Two months later, Normani shared the album\u2019s first single<\/a>, \u201c1:59,\u201d featuring Gunna<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Normani told Elle<\/em> in an April 2024 interview that the six-year delay was due to her not wanting to release something she didn\u2019t believe in 100 percent. Her experience as part of Fifth Harmony left a bad taste in her mouth because she felt the band didn\u2019t have \u201ca real opinion\u201d on their career path until the end, and often \u201cput out music and records that I don\u2019t wholeheartedly believe in.\u201d She didn\u2019t want to repeat that as a solo artist.<\/p>\n

June 2018<\/h3>\n

Normani announced she had settled on a title for her debut LP. \u201dI have my album title, y\u2019all,\u201d she wrote in the now-infamous tweet<\/a>.<\/p>\n

October 2018<\/h3>\n

Normani told Billboard <\/a><\/em>she had been in the studio \u201cfor the last few months just really starting from the ground up.\u201d She said she\u2019d been busy cowriting and coproducing music alongside \u201ca lot of amazing songwriters and producers that I\u2019ve [wanted] to work with for such a long time now.\u201d During that chat, she teased that \u201csome records [are] coming out very soon\u201d but noted they might not be part of her album.<\/p>\n

October 2020<\/h3>\n

Two years after Normani announced she had an album title, she told Teen Vogue<\/em><\/a> that she was getting \u201cclose\u201d to finishing the project. \u201cWhen God tells me that it\u2019s done, then it\u2019ll be done. I\u2019ll feel it, you know?\u201d she said in the interview. \u201cI really want to create a body of work that\u2019s going to count, you know? I\u2019m never going to get my first album back.\u201d<\/p>\n

December 2021<\/h3>\n

Normani appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres<\/em> Show and told guest host Ciara<\/strong> that the album was \u201calmost done.\u201d She also asked fans to be more patient with her. \u201cPeople underestimate how hard it is and how much effort we put into one project, one body of work,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Normani went on to explain that when she was in Fifth Harmony, much of the work was divided up. As a solo artist, there was \u201ca lot that I had to figure out about myself and fears that I had to deal with head-on.\u201d<\/p>\n
