On Friday, a federal judge ordered former President Donald Trump\u2019s former aides to testify before\u00a0a grand jury investigating Trump\u2019s efforts to overturn the 2020 election, rebuffing Trump\u2019s claims of executive privilege.<\/p>\n
Special counsel\u00a0Jack Smith<\/strong>\u00a0sought testimony from former chief of staff\u00a0Mark Meadows<\/strong>, former Director of National Intelligence\u00a0John Ratcliffe<\/strong>, his former national security adviser\u00a0Robert O’Brien<\/strong>, former top aide\u00a0Stephen Miller<\/strong>, former deputy chief of staff\u00a0Dan Scavino<\/strong>, former top DHS official\u00a0Ken Cuccinelli<\/strong>, and former aides\u00a0Nick Luna<\/strong> and\u00a0John McEntee<\/strong>. Trump\u2019s legal team tried to block his former officials from having to testify, arguing that his executive privilege as president extended to private communications he had with aides.<\/p>\n Judge\u00a0Beryl Howell<\/strong> rejected the Trump team\u2019s assertions in a sealed ruling last week, meaning the\u00a0former officials will have to testify<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cThe DOJ is continuously stepping far outside the standard norms in attempting to destroy the long accepted, long held, Constitutionally based standards of attorney-client privilege and executive privilege,\u201d a Trump spokesperson said in a statement.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cThere is no factual or legal basis or substance to any case against President Trump. The deranged Democrats and their comrades in the mainstream media are corrupting the legal process and weaponizing the justice system in order to manipulate public opinion, because they are clearly losing the political battle.\u201d<\/p>\n The existence of the sealed ruling was first reported by ABC News, which also added that\u00a0Trump is likely to appeal it<\/a>.<\/p>\n While some of the\u00a0high-profile former officials have already appeared before the grand jury, they reportedly didn\u2019t answer some questions related to communications with the former president; due to last week\u2019s ruling, they are now obligated to give additional testimony.\u00a0<\/p>\n Meadows already handed over thousands of text messages<\/a> to the House select panel that investigated January 6, yet refused to be interviewed by the committee. He also appeared before a separate grand jury in Fulton County, Georgia<\/a> investigating the efforts to reverse the 2020 election results in the state.<\/p>\n This ruling is the second time Judge Howell rejected the Trump team\u2019s legal arguments in the past week. On Wednesday, in a separate case involving the possible mishandling of classified documents, Judge Howell also ruled that Trump\u2019s defense attorney,\u00a0Evan Corcoran<\/strong>, has to testify before a grand jury due to the\u00a0crime-fraud exception<\/a>, which states that attorney-client privilege cannot apply when a client uses a lawyer to further a crime. Jack Smith is also leading this criminal investigation.<\/p>\n In response, a Trump spokesperson said the ruling was \u201cviolation of due process,\u201d adding, \u201cWhenever prosecutors target the attorneys, that\u2019s usually a good indication their underlying case is very weak. If they had a real case, they wouldn\u2019t need to play corrupt games with the Constitution. Every American has the right to consult with counsel and have candid discussions \u2013 this promotes adherence to the law.\u201d<\/p>\n As the probe into the 2020 election simmers, Trump will host his first 2024 presidential campaign rally in Waco, Texas on Saturday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
