The Criminal Minds: Evolution<\/em><\/a> cast is grabbing their go bags for season 2 \u2014 and a fan-favorite character might be making his long-awaited return.<\/p>\n

When Criminal Minds<\/em><\/a> finished its 15-season run on CBS, fans still wanted more from the Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU) agents. Thanks to Paramount+, viewers got their wish. The spinoff series, Criminal Minds: Evolution<\/em>, premiered via the streaming service in November 2022.<\/p>\n

This time around, the returning BAU members (nearly every cast member from the original series reprised their roles) followed one serial killer across all 10 episodes: Elias Voit (Zach Gilford<\/strong><\/a>).<\/p>\n

Before the first season of Evolution came to an end, Paramount+ renewed the show for season 2.<\/p>\n

Criminal Minds is back with a revival on Paramount+ titled Criminal Minds: Evolution \u2014 but fans have watched the cast change on and off screen since the procedural first debuted. In 2005, viewers were introduced to a group of criminal profilers who work for the FBI as members of its Behavioral [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The statement teased that there are \u201cmany dark twists and turns\u201d still to come for the BAU.<\/p>\n

Along with more dark and twisty storylines, Evolution fans are also hoping for the return of Matthew Gray Gubler<\/strong><\/a> as the famed Dr. Spencer Reid. He was one member of the original cast who did not appear in the first season of the spinoff \u2014 much to fans\u2019 chagrin.<\/p>\n

What Will \u2018Criminal Minds: Evolution\u2019 Season 2 Be About?<\/h3>\n

Since Elias Voit created a network of serial killers, it\u2019s safe to say that his influence isn\u2019t out of the picture just yet. Showrunner Erica Messer<\/strong> even teased that they\u2019re \u201cmoving on with him involved\u201d in season 2.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen Zach became Voit, we absolutely fell in love with his portrayal of this guy \u2014 this complicated creature,\u201d Messer told Entertainment Weekly<\/em><\/a> in February 2023. \u201cBy the time the season ended we were like, \u2018Can we keep playing with him? Is there a world where he\u2019s in the next season? What does that look like?\u2019 So, we have plans to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI wish that there was some promise that I could make to everybody, but it\u2019s not my promise to keep,\u201d Messer told EW<\/em> in February 2023 about Reid\u2019s return. Gubler, however, revealed that he\u2019d be down to play the character once again.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would be honored. I would absolutely love that,\u201d the actor shared during a September 2023 interview<\/a>. \u201cThey did a newer spinoff of the show, but it was filming during a time when I was shooting something else. But I can\u2019t wait \u2014 hopefully it will soon work out.\u201d<\/p>\n

After eagle-eyed fans spotted Reid\u2019s nameplate in a social media post from set in May 2024, Messer addressed speculation about Gubler\u2019s return. \u201cIt hasn\u2019t worked out for Season 17. But we love him. He loves us,\u201d Messer told TVInsider<\/em> at the time<\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s not any of that. It\u2019s just we\u2019ve got to find a time to make it work.\u201d<\/p>\n

Messner noted that Reid\u2019s desk and nameplate are still on the set, telling the outlet, \u201cIt\u2019s always staying there as far as I\u2019m concerned. \u2026 You\u2019ll see it throughout the show.\u201d<\/p>\n
