Drew Barrymore<\/strong><\/a> has wanted to make a Wizard of O<\/i>z prequel film for more than two decades.<\/p>\n

\u201cSurrender Dorothy <\/i>is the script I\u2019ve been trying to get made for, I kid you not, 28 years,\u201d Barrymore, 49, exclusively told Us Weekly <\/i>while discussing her Ring and ASPCA<\/a> partnership. \u201cWhen we first started Flower Films, it was one of the first scripts I fell in love with and we developed it. So it feels very personal to me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Barrymore, who launched her Flower Films production company in 1995, further noted that the script is likely \u201clying in a vault somewhere.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a director, I would give anything to do [make] that,\u201d she gushed. \u201cAnd then as an actor, it was sort of not really available to me for many years. And I did try, but [it]\u00a0 wasn\u2019t feeling right for me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Barrymore started acting when she was 5 years old, booking her first starring role as Gertie in Steven Spielberg<\/strong>\u2019s E.T.<\/i> two years later. A member of the famed Barrymore acting family, she starred in more than 50 films before eventually taking a step back to focus on raising daughters Olive, 11, and Frankie, 10, whom she shares with ex-husband Will Kopelman<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would have some really fun times getting to play a character like on Santa Clarita Diet. <\/i>I loved the character but I wasn\u2019t able to fit it in with the type of mom I want to be<\/a> and the show did,\u201d she said, referring to her 2017 Netflix series.<\/p>\n

With the kids getting older, Barrymore is considering taking on more acting projects.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think the girls are like, \u2018Yeah, mom, we\u2019re doing great. If you want to go do that, go back and do things<\/a>,\u2019\u201d she told Us. \u201c<\/i>Getting that permission from them was really huge and sort of opened up my mind, so we\u2019ll see.\u201d<\/p>\n

Barrymore\u2019s Flower Films is gearing up to celebrate its 30th anniversary, which is close to the years that she\u2019s been developing Surrender Dorothy.<\/i><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s all the same members, and we\u2019re all very prolifically at work right now, much more than I\u2019ve expected to be,\u201d she explained. \u201cWe\u2019re producing a lot of stuff, and I\u2019ve been trying to slow down, and then it\u2019s not looking slow at all right now. It\u2019s looking extremely prolific. I feel very grateful.\u201d<\/p>\n
