Debbie Gibson<\/strong><\/a> is glad that the music industry has become more welcoming of women since she got her big break in the \u201880s.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy late, great mom literally pounded her fists on the conference room table at Atlantic Records to drive the point home that a young girl could write and produce her own music. Now look at Billie Eilish<\/strong> and Taylor Swift<\/strong> <\/a>and everybody who\u2019s come after,\u201d Gibson, 53, exclusively told Us Weekly<\/em> at Lupus L.A.\u2019s inaugural Cuisine for a Cause event at Vibiana on Sunday, May 19. \u201cNobody was warm and welcoming to female songwriters [when I started], let alone producers at that time. So, I mean, to me, the landscape has just opened wide up.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gibson went on to praise Swift, 34, as an \u201cextraordinary\u201d talent.<\/p>\n

\u201c[The Tortured Poets Department<\/em> song] \u2018I Can Do It With a Broken Heart\u2019 is my new anthem,\u201d Gibson said. \u201cI think a lot of us kind of live that, and showbiz women live it. It\u2019s like we get on stage and we sing and dance, and then we go cry in a corner later about our personal life. She\u2019s done so much to move the style forward and to empower women.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tTaylor Swift continues to be in her record-breaking era with the release of The Tortured Poets Department. Swift, 34, released her 11th studio album on April 19, and it immediately began shattering sales and streaming records left and right. TTPD racked up 2.6 million equivalent album sales in the first week of its release, with [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The \u201cLost in Your Eyes\u201d singer previously called Eilish, 22, \u201ca wise old soul\u201d during a November 2021 interview with The Guardian<\/em><\/a> and said Eilish seemed to be \u201chandling all the pressure\u201d of being in the public eye \u201cbeautifully.\u201d<\/p>\n

While reflecting on how the industry has changed for women, Gibson imagined what it might be like if she were starting her career today.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just could imagine the stress and exhaustion that my mom and I exerted just to get past the gatekeepers to get to the starting gate could\u2019ve been eliminated,\u201d she said. \u201cThere\u2019s a freedom now for young artists, for female artists and I think really for female creative visionaries.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gibson released her debut album, Out of the Blue<\/em>, which she wrote and produced most of, in 1987. She went on to release 10 additional studio albums and is the sole songwriter on all of her singles to reach the top 20 of the Billboard<\/em> Hot 100 including \u201cFoolish Beat\u201d and \u201cElectric Youth.\u201d<\/p>\n

After more than 35 years in the music business, Gibson is now working on a memoir.<\/p>\n

\u201cI really call it a motivational memoir,\u201d she told Us<\/em>. \u201cIt\u2019s not like a salacious tell-all. It\u2019s always meant to be like, \u2018Here\u2019s what happened in my life.\u2019 \u2026 There\u2019s a lot about my late great mom, who was the original momager and bad ass music executive. It\u2019s how you can twist and turn and re-emerge victorious. That\u2019s really what it\u2019s about.\u201d<\/p>\n
