With 22 films in the running this year, the juried competition 2024’s Cannes Film Festival arguably offers an early taste<\/a> of this year’s Oscar contenders<\/a>, as well as a peek at how industry insiders from around the globe view the work of their peers.<\/p>\n This year also marks the first time an American female<\/a> director has led the competition’s jury: Barbie<\/em><\/a> director Greta Gerwig<\/strong> is its president<\/a>, so there’s an argument to be made that the winners of the juried competition, which were announced at an evening ceremony on Saturday, May 25, reflect where the influential artist sees the wind blowing.<\/p>\n As the jury emerged from its villa on Saturday, led by Gerwig, a red carpet commentator mused about the sometimes contentious deliberations of the voting body. \u201cSometimes they argue for hours,\u201d one said.
