A familiar batch of faces have reemerged at the top of the box office charts this weekend, as Avengers: Endgame Encore pulled in $26 million domestic and $60 million internationally. This is pretty impressive for a film that has been available to watch at home for years, but Marvel fans are apparently gearing up before the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday.
In the second spot was Resident Evil with $23 million in its second weekend of release. It fell a steep 60% from its opening weekend, but was able to place ahead of all of this week’s new releases, and has already made $103.4 million domestically and $196.5 million internationally against a $75 million budget.
Third place went to Heart of the Beast, which pulled in $20 million in North America and $30.1 million overseas. The Brad Pitt starring film has an $82 million pricetag, so it is a ways off from profitability.
Primetime followed just behind with a $19 million opening, already eclipsing its $15 million pricetag and making its mark as A24’s third-best opening of all time. Moviegoers gave the film a B Cinemascore, so reception has been somewhat mixed.
Finally, in the fifth spot was Forgotten Island, with $12.8 million domestic and $7.8 million internationally. This is a disappointing result for an animated film from Universal with an $80 million price tag, but critics and audiences loved it, giving it a 94% on Rotten Tomatoes and an A Cinemascore.
