Tom Holland and Jon Bernthal are taking on the spicy wings of death!
The Spider-Man and The Odyssey co-stars appeared on Hot Ones with Sean Evans, and the episode is out now.
During their appearance, the two talked about Tom not being able to find the crew on the first day of filming The Odyssey, as well as getting into an argument with Jon over accents in the United States vs. Britain. They also talked about why Jon didn’t speak when they first met due to method acting, and their characters in the movies.

Jon on his character Frank Castle / Punisher “never looking for the light” in Spider-Man: Brand New Day:
“I think you can’t ever get into anything with Frank that betrays that notion that consciously he is never looking for the light. He is never looking to relieve the pain. He’s looking to dive into it. He’s looking to go head first into it, to dig into the wound that kind of is his whole life’s view now. I’ve known a lot of people who put a lot of effort into building walls around their hearts and I think anybody who does that, there’s always cracks, and light always does shine through. I think it is what makes us kind of quintessentially human. As much as I look for opportunities to turn my back on the audience and to go to a place where I can’t be forgiven, I also love the opportunity to be won back and to find those little rays of light. And what better ray of light than this guy right here, right?”
Tom on not being able to find the crew on his first day on The Odyssey:
“I think that first day when I visited in Morocco. You [Jon] were working that day. And I went to the beach to just watch them work. I kind of wanted to get a bit of a jump on how Chris [Nolan] likes to work and just watch kind of from afar. And I arrived at the beach and I could not see a single crew member. You’re seeing miles and miles of ships and extras and warriors and horses and you’ll ask yourself like where is the crew? So then they asked me to walk down this beach and every sort of 10 minutes we’d hear ‘Rolling!’ And I’d have to lie down and hide behind these dunes. And I kept asking myself where are they rolling? I can’t see the crew anywhere. And then eventually I got down to where Matt [Damon] was and his men and all that sort of stuff. And it really felt at that moment like we were a part of something that had never been done before. Akin to the sort of Lawrence of Arabia. Those movies where they are legend, not just in the quality of the film, but in the size and scale and the ambition of what Chris was trying to do.”
Tom and Jon argue over which country has more accents:
Tom: “I think physicality for me is like step one with any character. But the accent for me, having an American accent is almost like a disguise. You know the moment that I start speaking with an English accent I feel like I go into like press mode. And it feels like a kind of a representation of who I am as a person. But I would love to explore some more British accents. Because, you know, as an island, we have some of the most interesting, unique and fun accents and I would love to do some work to figure out…I think there’s more accents in Britain than any other country. I think so.”
Jon: “Why is it always got to come to–”
Tom: “It’s not a competition. I’m just listing like a simple fact. “
Jon: “Ok so maybe it’s my problem, not your problem.”
Tom: “I think it’s a bit of a you problem.”
Jon: “Ok fine, then I’ll admit it’s a problem. But I would go out on a limb to say there are more accents in America than there are in Britain. Come on there has to be. Somebody’s got some sort of– how can you tell me that in that little country–”
Tom: “Just keep rolling on this because he’s going to eat his words.”
Jon: “Listen, you really think there’s more dialects in England than there are in America?”
Tom: “I would drink a shot of that hottest hot sauce–”
Jon: “No, don’t say that.”
Tom: “–To say that that’s right.”
Jon: “Really?”
Tom on the story of Jon not speaking when they first met because he was method acting:
Tom: “When we worked together the first time, Jon was playing a mute in the movie. And I was his best friend in the movie. And like three or four weeks before we started shooting we’d become good friends. We were hanging out and then all of a sudden he’s like, ‘Listen dog. Listen man, like I’m gonna have to do this s–t. Like I’m not gonna talk. I’m gonna go full f–king method. I’m not doing it. I’m gonna need your help. I’m gonna need to lean on your shoulder. I’m like yeah, whatever man. If that’s what you wanna do, that’s what you wanna do. And then for like two weeks, not a peep out of him, right? And we all know Jon Bernthal, we all love Jon Bernthal. My man loves to talk, right? So we sat at restaurants and he’s writing down his food. And these are regular restaurants in Ireland. And I’m having to be like I’m sorry about my friend, he’s just a pretentious actor. And I’m like reading out his order, right? And then one day we were in a restaurant and he had salmon. And he said to me, he wrote down, can you ask for some lemon for my salmon?”
Jon: “I like lemon on my salmon bro!”
Tom: “Yeah, listen, we all do!”
Jon: “And that’s all they had there was salmon! Anyways–”
Tom: “So the lady, so I said excuse me, can I have some lemon please for his salmon? And maybe she misheard me or something. So she came and brought this lemon and dropped it in his drink. In his water. And then he immediately was like, ‘Alright f–k it! I’m talking again!’”
Jon: “It’s true. It’s true.”
On Christopher Nolan calling The Odyssey “the Marvel of its day”:
“They’re really emotional. I think all of the best Marvel characters are ones that are really relatable. And have real emotions, you know? And I think that when you read the poem, it’s super, super emotional. And really just about the characters. With one of the most intricately told family dramas that I’ve seen. And neither one gets in the way of the other. You never feel like the scale is overshadowing the heart. And the heart is never dampening down the scale. And I think Chris is probably the only person that can do that. Because it’s a real skillset to be able to do that, you know? There’s so many different communities that feel seen in the Marvel world and I think, you know, The Odyssey is a globe-trotting adventure and experiences so many different cultural elements of that time I guess.”
