Conservatives will have to seethe, because Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey not only performed well this weekend, but landed the third biggest opening of the year so far with $124 million domestic and $264.1 million globally. The only two films that opened bigger this year were Toy Story 5 and Super Mario Galaxy, both of which are aimed at children, while The Odyssey has an R-rating and a nearly three hour runtime. It has earned an A Cinemascore from movie-goers, as well as postive reviews from critics.
Moana fell 56% from its opening weekend for second place at the box office, earning $19 million for a total of $82 million domestic and $178 million worldwide. It has the same production budget of The Odyssey at $250 million, but only one of those films is poised to be profitable.
Minions & Monsters and Toy Story 5 both brought in $14.8 million this weekend, effectively tying for third place with estimates, though the true numbers will be the tiebreaker tomorrow.
Minions has made $137 million in North America and $323 million worldwide after three weekends of release, which is low for the franchise records but will still turn a profit on an $85 million budget.
Toy Story 5 has been out for five weekends and is still chugging along, approaching the $1 billion mark with $430 million domestic and $958 million worldwide so far.
Last weekend’s debut Evil Dead Burn came in the fifth spot with $5 million, bringing its total domestic gross so far to $24.1 million.
And Supergirl has fallen so far it is in ninth place in its fourth weekend of release, bringing in just $1.5 million. It has made $69.9 million in North America and $120 million in total on a $170 million budget.
