The twins’ coming of age also marks a turning point in their parents’ long separation: the issue of custody is now definitively behind them. That means Jolie, who told The Hollywood Reporter in 2024 that she was required to remain in Los Angeles as a stipulation of the parental agreement, is finally free to move about the globe. “I am here because I have to be here from a divorce, but as soon as they’re 18, I’ll be able to leave,” she said then. But when her nest empties, “I’ll spend a lot of time in Cambodia. I’ll spend time visiting my family members wherever they may be in the world.”
That doesn’t mean the battle between Pitt and Jolie is over. The estranged pair remains at odds over Château Miraval, the French estate and winery they purchased during their time together (and where, incidentally, they were married in 2014), which continues to be the main front in their legal dispute.
Though Jolie said she had to remain in LA for the sake of custody, the frequency of Pitt’s current interactions with his children is unclear. Of their six children, only Pax (age 22) has kept his father’s name, and remains Pax Thien Jolie-Pitt. All his other siblings—including this weekend’s birthday celebrants—now go by the surname “Jolie.”
